Default Session Compatibility from TDM to AAX

I'll come at this one more time with a new thread.

Upwards compatibility is very important, and has been a feature of Pro Tools since the beginning. If I have current versions of the plug ins used on any given session, there's a very good chance I can open it in the future, with all the settings for the plugs intact.

Now, imagine a scenario where TDM is gone, I'm 100% AAX, and I want to open an older session that used TDM plugs. Assuming I have AAX versions of the same TDM plug ins I used in the old session, will the new AAX plugs be able to read and restore the TDM plug in settings and automation?

Can anyone answer this question?

How can we be expected make this transition without knowing if we can successfully open, and restore plug in settings from non-AAX sessions?

Avid, can you weigh in on this?

Avid's response has been that AAX should be backwards compatible with TDM and RTAS. Being that, if you have an old session with an RTAS or TDM plug and you have the AAX equivalent, it should open as normal with your original settings intact.

I know that I won't invest in AAX and HDX before I know a lot more facts...this is one of them.

But I'm pretty sure we all know a lot more next summer or so...

Well, you can try it with certain plugins that exist right now.

BlueCatAudio has a selection of free RTAS plugs that they recently converted to AAX. You could try instantiating an RTAS, then remove it from the plugins folder and drop in an AAX version and see what happens.

Scroll down to my question, then the DigiTechSupport answer. The thread continues on and is pretty specific about the intent that if the AAX equivalent is available it will open with settings intact in place of the TDM or RTAS version used in the earlier session.
