Re: mastering plugs other than waves
To replace the L2, you might want try the Sony Oxford Limiter. Higher up the price scale, you should check out the TC MD3 as a alternative to the L3. If you don't necessarily need a TDM plugin, the Izotope Ozone is a good one to try.

Izotope Ozone
In PT's 7.1cs7 and in Waveburner it's been a very clean plug-in. At first it's easy to get carried away but once your aware of it's power and keep to subtle changes...well it's quite good. Note: 1. it was a dog on a G4 dual 1, but a G5 dual 2.7 it's as it should be. 2. Not yet optimized for 7 but indications are that this will be coming. (Still it works fine as a RTAS on the Master) Try the demo! Ozone 3 |

Re: mastering plugs other than waves
Just used Ozone to master a CD project for the first time. Have been using the Waves plugs but decided to try Ozone out since many have been pleased with its results. I was pleasantly surprised how clean it sounded. I A/B'd it to my previous mastered projects using the L3 but for this price and sonic quality, I was very happy. Used in moderation, one can produce a masterpiece with this intuitive and nicely priced alternative. Yes, give it a try for free and post back.

Re: mastering plugs other than waves
Haven't tried the TC plug, but I've been extremely pleased with the Oxford Limiter and haven't used the L2/L3 since I got it.

Re: mastering plugs other than waves
Hello,
I've just downloaded this one: http://www.masseyplugins.com/L2007.html and played around with it. Sounded very clean compared to the L1. Detlef. |

Re: mastering plugs other than waves
The real question is what you expect from the "mastering" process
If you need something quite loud, big, sweet and in your face (95 % of pop today), then it will depend *a lot* on the source mix. 1 - If the mix (notice the number of ifs...;-) ) is good for that purpose, ie if the dynamics of each ingredient in the mix are 100% under control and the frequencies (notably bass freqs ) in each track have been dealt with correctly, then a little eq (if needed) + maybe a good compressor to cheat a little on the transients, and to finish a brickwall limiter (L2, Sony limiter) should be enough 2- if on the other hand the mix is, well, a little sketchy and need serious pumping up to be able to stand comparison to well known stuff on an average A&R man bad sound system, or sound like FM radio, then you need heavy multiband artillery stuff like L3, TC etc.

I just tried it too, and I thought it sounded so much like L2 that I tried mastering the same song twice, once with L2 and once with Massey's L2007 with the same settings. Imported them into a new file, flipped the phase on one and got...almost silence! I know that doesn't necessarily prove much, but given the disparity in price, it's definitely worth noting.
