need help with new room
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi guys this is a bit off topic but a wanted to know is anyone can help me with some planning work for a new post house Im working with. Here is the problem. They are running 2 rooms, one tools, one fairlight both connected to a main server to store finished mixes to lay back in the vision edit suite. The avid suite is fine but they also have a tape based suite as well. Does anyone know how to be able to have a mac/pc set up in the edit suite to be able to call up the files and have them lock to tape (timecode)? ie: editor finds file on server calls it up in audio program audio file knows in timecode where it is supposed to be audio program locks to tape timecode Thanks heaps in advance Cheers Laswell |

Re: need help with new room
i think this will be easiest with your fairlight. the network features with a fairlight medialink server and the audiobase2 on the mfx are great for playing and even locking to tc over a network..

Re: need help with new room
Thanks for the answers guys and keep em coming!
Ill expand a little, re the fairlight and the tools rooms! Once the mixes are finished ie stereo master placed on the server they want a simple playback system in the edit suites to call up the finished master and lock it to time code. I figured that mixing to bwavs will solve the tc issue because it has the time code stamped but Im after a "simple" solution to replay ,sorry digi I don't mean to be getting people to advertise others software on your site, a more committed pro tools user you could not find , in fact we are looking now at another 2 tools suites, and maybe an m-box is the answer here!! in an all tools world it would be! Hang on maybe im answering my on question, If i mix to bwave on the fairlight , would an m-box know the t/c stamp?? Digi??? This would solve my problems thanks heaps all Laswell |

Re: need help with new room
you can precisely spot a bwav file in LE (mbox) you just can´t see the tc adress..
LE can´t handle tc... frank.

Re: need help with new room
If you want to run protools and simply access the audio files on the server... you will need Fiber optics and a server specifically designed for Protools File sharing. PT will not play Appletalk or other "networked" device based files. You either must copy the files back to a local drive or have a fibre optic shared storage system. Even with such a system there are sharing issues revolving around shared access and multiple users. IE: Shared storage systems that work with protools generally require that a given Disk and/or directory be utilized by one person at a time. Copying the files from the server to your local system is the simplist method of accomplishing your plan. JUst make sure that you isolate your procontrol and other realtime network devices from your file transfer network segments. Although Ethernet will run at very high-speeds ( 100 mbps for example ) the actual thruput varies and since enthernet is a shared resource the network will Peak with file transfers for brief periods and it WILL cause Procontrols to glitch if the network segment Procontrol is on gets a spike in traffic. Basically Ethernet is a party line that everyone wants to talk at once on. Depending on your hardware ethernet address ( assigned by the builder of the ethernet device based on IEEE standards ) you wait a "random time" and re-transmit. IF a collossion detect occurs all traffic stops and again a "random" period occurs and retransmission occurs. Once you have the net you can send your packet. THis creates issues when you begin to slam a large un-segmented network. There are also very specifc design reules around segment sizes, numbers of connections, routhers, switches and hubs. You can simply isolate segments using a Router or Switch.. ( Not a hub ) If you plan on a large network with many users/internet/realtime control surfaces.. A well thought out network layout is crucial. Additionally a Network monitor ( hardware or software ) is very helpful in isolating problems. oops.. I rambled a bit, sorry.
cheers georgia

Re: need help with new room
I think what he's actually asking for is a computer system that can load the finished mix (download from the server or whatever) and play it back slaved to timecode for recording to a master tape (w/ pictures).
This computer system will live in his tape based video editing suite and act like a tape machine. The rest of the network scenario isn't what he's asking about (I think?). If an mBox LE system can sync to tc then that's probably your best bet - there might be other PC stlye app's that can do the same - but I dunno. (you'll probably need a TC to MTC convertor). |

Re: need help with new room
Thanks Matt you are indeed spot on.
( although thank you georgia for your input, it may not have answered my question, but its valuable info none the less) I think you can slave an m-box to t/c, So i just need help with the bwave stuff! will a bwave printed on a Fairlight lock up on the mbox slaved to T/C Cheers Laswell |
