Accelerator Card for G4/500. Which is best?
I am gong to upgrade my G4/500 and would like to get an accelerator card.
Any recommendations for the fastest and 100% compatible card with a Mix system would be appreciated. If these things are giving trouble, I'd rather buy a New G4. I'd like to save the money though.

Re: Accelerator Card for G4/500. Which is best?
I can't comment on the G4 to G4 upgrade, but I have always had the best results with the Sonnet brand.
I am thinking about putting a G4 upgrade in my 9600 (currently has a G3 500 in it). I want the G4 to gain altiverb capability. In my opinion though, when the upgrade card starts aproaching the $500 mark it is about time to get a new machine. It's not an easy decision. Be sure to buy from a retailer that will give you a 30 day return policy. OWC has always been good to me - they do have a 15% restocking fee, but it sure beats being stuck with something that won't work for you. |

Re: Accelerator Card for G4/500. Which is best?
I upgraded my G4 500 with a Powerlogix Dual 1ghz card and it has worked flawless.
Installation was simple and it is much quieter than the newest G4's. A good value considering it prolonged the life of my machine for another year or two....highly recommended. I also put an ATI Radeon 8500 card in and bumped the RAM up to 1.5 gigs when i did the install. Cheers |

Being I have no intentions on ungrading from the mix system and from PT 5.1.3. I am wondering if they wold be any benifits for a dual. I'm thiking of a 1 ghz card and not a dual unless anyone can tell me of what other advantages I may have with the dual. If I stay single I may just sell my 500 and get a used 933. What do you guys and gals think?

Re: Accelerator Card for G4/500. Which is best?
Betsy,
Given the conditions you state...a single processor upgrade would be better suited to your setup. My reasons were simply that: a) I am using OSX for everything other than Pro Tools at this point. b) I compose and do most of my work in Logic OSX....and mix in Pro Tools. If you have no plan on moving to Pro Tools for OSX (when it comes out), then there is no real advantage to dual processors for you at this time...... Best of luck |
