Re: How Is PT Now?
I think if you're mainly using audio, then PT 11.0.2 is fine, but if you're looking to start stacking up vi's, then wait it out for 11.1 because I think there will be several updates int he coming weeks which will smooth out a lot of the issues we've all been having with VI's.

Re: How Is PT Now?
I'm also a home user. 11R is a big part of my workflow, and 11.0.2 is still missing the 11R editor. I was an early "purchaser" of 11, but am just now starting to "adopt" it - but can't fully until the 11R editor reappears. For me, it's a lot about the plugins, too, so NI coming out in AAX 64 bit really enabled me to now start using 11 as much as I use 10. If you're going to upgrade eventually, I say you might as well go ahead and jump on in!

Re: How Is PT Now?
I'm running HD11 regularly now, with the new AIR instruments are a few others incl. AAX64, MachFive, FabFliter, Avid Pro Dynamics, Slate VBC, BlueCat etc. The later BC mixer doing a fine job of running UA plugs, Altiverb, tho' these soon to drop.
On a MacPro, can't say I've experienced any real issues recently. Stays up all day, no fuss. Lot's of VI work, audio recording, mixing, bouncing, stemming etc. Without a hiccup really, only the occasion rapid 'goodbye' crash, but I suspect this is a VI, not Tools. Surprised actually. Looking forward to 11.1 where the whole thing will begin to move forward, with most AAX available and less talk about the past. Deleted HD 10.3.7 now. Same goes for lighter mixing work on a MacBook Air, really. [Do wish they'd get up to speed with freeze tho', presently, atypically PT101 'workflow' mentality –[bleep]click, click, click for no good reason. Take a leaf from say, oh, Reaper, Samplitude?] NB: In my experience, the Win version is not nearly so well behaved, nor is the GUI particularly acceptable really (looks like a hangover from XP vintage: no floating mixer window for example, a real drag on dual screens generally. Feels ancient). Not so sure Avid pays as much attention to Win as they do OS X. Performance & reliability I have also found much less so than on my Macs. Re: How Is PT Now?
When I said "do it all" I meant I was waiting for the new PT, whatever it may be, that would do all the good stuff we like that PT 10 does. That the new release would support all the old plugins and have all the PT 10 features, plus the advances of making it worthy of being a new update. From what I've been reading for months is that PT 11 made a lot of good things obsolete. It added some good new features, but lost some good old features. Until it will do all of it I'm staying with PT10. There seems to be obvious sacrifices to be made to switch from 10 to 11.
It seems a little like the Vista release. In the beginning there was a huge roar of dissatisfaction, then people slowly adapted, then MS upgraded it and fixed some of the bugs, but it was never the darling that everyone had hoped for. Oh, and I'm using a MBP v 10.7.5 with 2.2 intel i7, 16 gb memory and DDR 3. Thanks for all the info. JGP (re: the Memphis comment...I'm from the general Memphis area, but now also have a place in Nashville. I don't see a lot of studios, but I like a few and my favorite is using PT 9. I haven't heard of any that are using PT 11.) |

So, hoping for PT11 to be exactly as PT10 was.. is a pipe dream. Maybe you can list all the features you feel where abandoned from PT10 to PT11 over at idea scale, and if anyone else agrees with you..maybe they will get some attention. Otherwise, I honestly think that this is it for this release as far as features and functionality are concerned. It will be more or less bug fixes and maybe some updated plugins added in a 11.x release..but I don't see a complete reversal in the direction they are heading in. Personally, I like PT10..it is solid and works great on my system and it is what I will continue to use for some time…and who knows…maybe the next PT11 update will finally get it running as solid as PT10 is now. |

Re: How Is PT Now?
I run PT11 and was having a hard time on purchasing the upgrade for a few months. But I am glad I have switched. I haven't had one issue except for user error. For all my RTAS and AUs I also purchased Vienna Ensemble Pro 5 and it works great with it. No issues whatsoever, not even any cpu overloads.

Re: How Is PT Now?
I didn't say PT11 was tragic and the worst PT release in history. I said "PT11 seems a little like Vista." I think that is an accurate statement. If you are going to quote me, quote me correctly.
I never said I wanted PT 10 to be exactly like PT11. I said I had heard that some of the good features, esp concerning plugins, was lost. A lot of people complained about that. Many felt PT took a step forward in some ways with 11, and a step backwards too. Which is true. I just logged on and see yet more complaints about it. Like I said....after reading all the reviews and this message board here about PT11, I think PT10 is fine for me. PT11 doesn't seem worth the time for a home studio, not for me anyway. Everything I have in PT10 works fine as it is. Like we say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" which is much better than "if we can't fix it we'll fix it so no one else can fix it either." JGP |
