Late to this thread but I've only just joined.

I did a shoot out with a load of mics on different size toms and found that the ones that I liked the most were:

421s on the rack toms and an Audix D4 on the floor toms. The Audix just delivered more thickness than the other microphones for the floor. Then I just chucked 57s on the underneath to get the rest of the tone of the drum.
