Preamp?? ahhh.
With a $400 - $1000 budget, can anyone suggest a good preamp? Obviously if I could get away with only spending $400 that would be excellent but I'm kinda leaning more towards quality and am willing to spend the extra cash.....
Oh, this is the list I'm looking at: http://www.rocknrollrentals.com/recording.html Any suggestions appreciated. T |

Re: Preamp?? ahhh.
that's a rental list. do you want to rent or to buy?
I have always thought renting was a reasonable way to test some things if your dealer can't/won't do a loan that said an API style frame is a good way to sart a mix and match collation of pres, EQs and, comp/lims A lot of thing have been redesigned to fit that frame

Re: Preamp?? ahhh.
I will second the API lunchbox, but it can get pricey to fill it. Fivefishaudio.com offers some great preamps in the lunchbox format, AND in kit form for mounting in a rack chassis(sadly the lunchbox versions are not available in kit form). Their X-12 preamp is voiced like an API 312 and sounds excellent(under $500 per channel). Grace 101 is another good choice. UA610 has good character. Focusrite 710 is very cool(tube, solid state or a blend) and their ISA-one is very clean. Lots of choices(and others will offer more than I have). These are simply the ones I know best

I had a grace 101. I didn't care for it. It was super clean and I can see its value. I like a little color. So my summit 2ba-221's are awesome. Can be clean or can be "tubey" and got the pair used for a great deal. There are lots of options. There's also the fmr rnp. Those get a lot of love for the price.
