Default EXTENDED Vs JOURNALED HD FORMATS

I'm working with both, ProTools HD3 Accel and LE running PT LE 6.4 with MAC OS 10.3.5. I'm using external firewire drives to run the sessions, which sometimes can be really big (in HD3).
I'm not sure which formatting is better for these external drives: Extended or Journaled. I did try formatting my drive with the extended version, then a copied 70Gb of sessions from other hard drive and when I open the sessions a DAE error comes up and the session won't play. Then I did this exact operation, only this time I formatted the drive as journaled, it worked perfectly.
According to Apple Jounaling is more reliable, but extended is faster and has better performance, but then again I had problems with it.
Does anyone has an answer for this puzzle?

Your help would be greatly appreciated

Best;

Macky

do you mean HFS+? that is what digi specifies vs UNIX format. Journaling is a different feature of the OS., I think that digi again recommends NOT using it. but it can be turned off with Drive Setup.

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure if extended means HFS+. When you use the erase function within Disk Utility, it gives four options (Mac Extended, Mac Extended Journaled, MS-DOS and UNIX)...

Are you sure Digi suggests not using the Journaled function?

Thanks again for your help

Choose the first one, Mac Extended.

HFS Extended (HFS+) = Yes
Journaling = No

Details in the Compatibility Documents under Hard Drive Requirements:
HD Systems
http://www.digidesign.com/compato/osx/hd/drives.cfm
LE Systems
http://www.digidesign.com/compato/osx/stg/le.cfm

Then in the Pro Tools workspace window, make sure you set the drive as a valid record drive.
