Default 2018 Mac Mini 6 Core i7

Who’s rockin’ one with the latest PT2019 Ultimate and loves it?

Would love to hear thoughts and any positives/negatives you’ve run into, now that they’ve been out for a year.

Thanks!!
Sig

There’s a pretty comprehensive thread on here with people’s experiences with the machine.

Fair few of them using HD.

computer is a beast. the wifi and BT are sketchy. If I had it to do over I would contemplate getting a used 12 core trash can

Many are implying this was a software update issue?

As an owner of the prior gen Mac Mini, I’ll bet my life a software update won’t fix the BT issues.

Essentially, there’s poor shielding and any USB3 devices connected in ‘close proximity’ will cause issues. Even an ext BT dongle didn’t cure it for me.

It seems they didn’t learn from their past mistakes.

Well, I don’t really use BT much, and I’m a wired keyboard and Kensington trackball kinda guy, so these issues might not matter much to me...but it is a drag that Apple has issues like this...

Wired peripherals won’t be an issue.

I switched back to a wired keyboard but I use my Logitech mouse with the included dongle rather than in BT mode and that works fine.

But yeah, it sucks that these issues still persist.

Well, I have a good opportunity to buy one used locally this morning. Advantage is that the price is nearly half of what a new one with a few upgrades costs...disadvantage is obviously that it cannot be returned. I don’t imagine Apple will offer any sort of recall and hardware fix for these, and a next gen could be out this fall or next spring...but a next gen might still not be fixed, especially if Apple doesn’t even acknowledge that there’s a problem.

If the system works well with PT, then it’s still a good rig to use for now. I’m not stoked on the price of the base model of the new Pro, and the new laptops have too many issues as well.

This mini presents itself in a unique position to be used at the studio as a great tracking system, but can be taken to our other locations for mix and overdubs easily enough - something a new Pro can’t. I already keep screens/keyboards/trackballs at all those locations, so my hope is that this will be a good solution for the next several years.

The BT issues, if they’re still there on the new machines, would not prevent me from buying one of these Mac Minis.

FYI - I have four of these machines. Two of the Quad Cores and two of the dual cores. None of them have ever missed a beat. The BT issue, which only rears its head on the two machines that I have USB3 devices plugged into them, is not enough for me to not buy and use them.

I’d jump on it if they’re that cheap. You’ll still have a warranty and if they acknowledge any major issues, you’ll get it fixed free with an out of warranty repair program.
