Reveals that hum
Am I doing something wrong. Why would I get a loud hum in my monitors that I didn't have before. I moved my system around and tried to plug my Tannoy Reaveals back in and now they have this really annoying hum. Did I do something wrong?

Re: Reveals that hum
make sure EVERYTHING is grounded and if you have a cordless phone, move it to another room....

Re: Reveals that hum
Even fluorescent lights do it to mine. One in particular, near the pc and digi box... When it's off, there's no hum, but I can't see a thing.....(joke,joke...) But, seriously, must be a grounding thing...

Re: Reveals that hum
Hi,
I just got a pair of Reveal's and last night I noticed a very annoying hum coming only from the right monitor. The way I hooked up the power for the Reveal's was by plugging a power-strip into one of my Rackriders that has nothing else plugged into it so that I can power off the monitors before any of my other gear(without having to power off the monitors from the switches on the back of the Reveals). The power-strip only has the 2 power chords from the monitors plugged into it. Is this not a good way to supply power to the monitors or can this be causing a ground loop? Thanks, Marc |

Re: Reveals that hum
One good way to eliminate the possibility of any AC related ground loops is to totally lift the ground on everything. Plug everything into the same power strip (distribute from the same strip to other strips). Then, from the ground lift wire on the master strip, connect a wire to the closest direct ground line. I just put in a new sub-panel in the studio, and ground for it is coming directly from outside on the grounding-post itself - Neutral from the basement panel, and all hots are from the same leg from the basement - nothing in the house shares this leg.

Re: Reveals that hum
maybe this is a bit off-topic here, but after my house was hit by lightning and killed my pc, vcr, tv, answering-machine, microwave etc. i got mycelf some power-spike/rfi-filter powerstrips. They indeed work since i dont hear the fridge switch on anymore on my speakers......costed something about $25 (50 dutch guilders)

Re: Reveals that hum
Read the tech info at:
http://www.equitech.com/ They have boxes that create balanced power. It will get rid of all hums and will increase as much as 20 db in your signal to noise ratio. I think a 15 amp box is a little over $1k. Read about it. AC power has 120V on one leg and zero on the other. The ground is designed to protect you from getting schocked, not to provide a ground return for equipment. Balanced power makes 60V on each leg. It is like balanced audio with a plus, minus and ground. Don't lift the equipment ground without some other correct ground connecting all your equipment.

Re: Reveals that hum
Hi,
Last night I noticed that both speakers are humming but only in PTLE. As soon as I close PTLE the humming stops. I thought this was normal until I started playing mp3's using MediaPlayer and there was no hum. While playing an mp3 I cranked up the volume on the 001 and kept hitting pause and no hum what-so-ever. Doesn't this mean that it is not a grounding problem? Does anyone know why using PTLE causes a hum but using only the WaveDriver doesn't? Thanks, Marc |

Re: Reveals that hum
Does your mp3 player use a different sound card than PT? If so, could be the PT card has a problem. You could try re-seating it.
