Default Beeping/Buzzing When Using My MBOX

First, I'll let you know what I'm working with:
- A brand new MBOX
- ProTools LE 6.4
- 867 MHz PowerBook G4
- MacOS 10.3.4

I don't have any inputs running into my MBOX. I simply have the USB cable plugged from the MBOX to the PowerBook (no hubs) and a pair of headphones plugged into the front headphone jack. The beeping/buzzing starts when I launch ProTools. It occurs in bursts... If I were to describe the characteristic of the beeping/buzzing, it would be like morse code. It's very faint and constant and gets louder if I raise the volume knobs. My Airport card is not on, so that eliminates any possibility of interference. And it's not the headphones because I've tried it with multiple pairs. Am I doing something wrong, or do I have a peice of busted hardware?

- John M.

One possibility: this noise can occur if you don't use the USB cable included with the Mbox (or add a USB extender cable of any sort).

Nope. Using the original cable with no extensions.

Are you using balanced cables to go to your amplifier or powered speakers?

Is your input set on SPDIF, if yes try analog.

I'm not using an amplifier or powered speakers. Just a pair of headphones plugged into the jack on the front.

I don't think so. The SPDIF light is not lit, so I guess not.

PROBLEM SOLVED:
SoundWrangler, your suggestion led to my solution, indirectly. Thank you very much... But it turns out, it's DigiDesign's fault, not mine. You suggested that perhaps I was using an unofficial cable or an extension... But it turns out, it was an unofficial cable that GOT RID of the problem. DigiDesign's cable INCLUDED with my MBox turned out to be the source of the buzzing! So now I'm using a shorter cable from an HP printer. DigiDesign is distributing busted USB cables.

Make sure they give you a new one - yours was just defective. Glad to hear you're up & running, though.
