Default Swapping to an internet browser

Is there some way I can open an internet browser while Pro Tools is open and not have it suddenly default to have all sound directed there? It gets so confused when I open anything else that could play audio that I usually have to restart Pro Tools entirely if I open a Chrome window.

Assuming you are on Windows, make sure that your interface is set NOT to be the default for Windows audio. Choose your onboard sound device for this, ie Realtek Audio. Control Panel - Sound - Playback & Recording tabs.

I am on a Windows machine, but I actually haven't got an interface. Everything is currently going through my onboard sound card. Do I need to change a different option in my Settings?

Pro Tools doesn't like when it has to share the interface with other applications, in your case you only have the onboard audio, that's why both PT and the system have conflict.
Get a cheap USB interface with 1 or 2 channels, you'll enjoy the improvement.

It may not be that PT doesn't like to share an interface as much as the interface itself cannot be shared due to its driver implementation. There are devices with multi-client ASIO drivers that don't have the exclusive use issues with PT. Maybe the OP should be on the lookout for one of those.
