Default How do I monitor my input

I have spent 2 hours trying to figure out what should be a simple task, can someone please enlighten me?

How can I hear my instrument through my monitors without having the track record enabled?

After recording audio I then have to disable record enable to hear the audio I just recorded along with the other tracks.

I want to be able to hear my instrument regardless of whether the track is record enabled or not and regardless of whether I am recording and monitoring the whole mix or playing back and listening to all the tracks together.

I have input monitor enabled but it does nothing unless the track is record armed, this makes no sense at all.

Thanks.

I sometimes will set up an aux track for the instrument that I'm working with, helps with monitoring and a few other things.

I'm used to Sonar and it doesn't matter if the track is record armed or not, I can always hear my instrument through the monitors as long as 'input echo' is activated on the track, whether I'm recording or just playing back the project.

I notice that PT HD has separate input monitor widgets on each track... does this mean that HD has the capability that I am looking for?

It seems like there should be a 'third' monitor mode other than Auto and Input Only.

I'll try the aux method, thanks.

Alt-K will toggle Auto-Input and Input-Only monitoring. You can also just go into record on your rehearsal passes and hit Ctrl-z after each stop(which will delete the new audio as if it never happened. Adding an AUX track as described is yet another option.

Hi,

OK, just to be clear, I am NOT missing something???

You are saying that Pro Tools DOES NOT have the capability to allow rehearsal of a new track (by simply arming it and playing along with my other tracks) without having my new track actually recording?
This seems a huge waste of disc space not to mention a huge PITA.

If I was in a studio using a tape machine I could easily listen to the mix over and over while playing along with it WITHOUT HAVING TO HIT THE RECORD BUTTON!

If I am correct that this cannot be done, then could someone please explain how to set up the AUX track to accomplish this task as suggested because I don't see how that would do anything different?

Thanks.

Assign the Aux track to the same input as the record track if you want to always hear your live input.

You don't need to hit record, just be record enabled and toggle Alt+k as mentioned earlier above.

PHEW... I finally got it to work the way I thought it should!!!!

Thanks.

....what a relief, now with Axiom Pro and input monitor figured out I am just loving Pro Tools after 8 years of Cakewalk.

Sans Amp just ROCKS!!! it is, by far THE BEST amp simulator I have used.

I recently bought a Blackstar HT 5 with effect processor to do direct recording... NO NEED :), I think I'm going to return it (it's a great amp but Sans amp plug in gives me the tone I like and I can record dry and always go back and change stuff later).

I'm pulling up old drum loops in Structure and just having a ball playing along, they sound beautiful and play immaculately... and soooo easy.

It seems that Pro Tools has become a program that you really can 'create on the fly' with, a long time plus for other programs (like Sonar which has slowly become the opposite - getting bogged down in extras that don't work well and sound very mediocre).
