Pro Tools Aggregate
Is it possible to use the S3 in aggregate with an Avid hd I/O interface, combining the I/O?

Re: Pro Tools Aggregate
No. You cannot aggregate (e.g. CoreAudio Aggregate IO) anything with a HD interface. And the S3 is not Digilink/TDM so you cannot aggregate/join it that way either.

Pro Tools Aggregate
But it can be combined right?
That was my understanding, not via core audio but by having it (S3) in your session the IO is there.... Right or wrong? Now I feel like starting a support case

The IO is there really because this started out as a live controls surface tied to AVB stage racks. Going AVB may make lots of sense but Avid has kinda lost the thread with no innovation with it's legacy TDM/HD interfaces. So you now have fragments of two incompatible systems, TDM/HD interfaces and an AVB interface. I expect the AVB interface in the S3 to be most often used as a stand-alone single interface for playback/mixing. And for that use it is provably pretty handy. And maybe one day if Avid or others deliver nice AVB products it can be aggregated with those. |

Re: Pro Tools Aggregate
well it seems shortsighted to say the least if the I/O cannot be incorporated into the session......with your current I/O...
I asked the support portal, and will find out what they say

Re: Pro Tools Aggregate
D-Ram for the win again......I just got this message back from the Support Center.......
Hi, When using the S3 as an audio interface with Pro Tools it would be a separate playback engine, it can't be combined with your HD hardware as an aggregate device. The setup would be one or the other. If you have an HD system you would want to use the S3 as a control surface and continue to use your HD/HDX hardware as your Current Playback Engine. You would not use the audio interface features on the S3. The S3 can be configured to pass audio from your HD I/O through it's monitoring controls. This would be the way it would be used with an HD system as a control surface. Let me know if you have any additional questions. Well I guess that answers that....I must have assumed that the monitor control video was pulling audio via the S3 itself.....It appears that's not the case.......
