If you want a fat snare, kick etc then use parallel compression, create a send to an aux with a compresor on it, set the threshold high. Slowly introduce it to the mix and you'll get a fat sound. Smack is good for this but any compressor will do the job.

Just duplicate the track, insert the same plugin on both, and bypass one of them.
Or, if you are dealing with multiple tracks, send them to two auxes with the same: one compressing and one with the compressor bypassed.

I run parallel compression on drums using either BF76 or Waves SSL bus compressor with no phase issues. I haven't tried SMACK so maybe it has more latency than the others.

I love smack for Parallel drum compression, but it does induce 1 sample of delay.
If your crazy like me and have to compensate for every single sample of delay, you have to insert either a bypassed smack on the Dry drum Aux, or 5 sample time adjuster on the dry aux and 4 sample on the compressed aux. How come time adjuster short starts at 4 samples? what can't it delay just 1 sample? seems kinda weird...
