Default HDN Users: Windows 10 vs. Windows 8.1

Hey, all. I assume a lot of people have made that update by now, so I'm wondering if the consensus is that W10 offers noticeable and consistent improvements for Pro Tools users. I know a lot of people hated Windows 8, but my system is pretty stable running 8.1 so I don't want to bother with the hassle of an OS change unless there's good reason.

Since your rig runs good now, this is a perfect time to save a drive image. That way, update or not, you can recover to a good-working system. Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Pro(Macrium is free, but Backupper Pro has some worthwhile features. There is also a free version of Backupper)

Good point. I haven't done an image for awhile. I have Acronis. I should use it more often.

Yes you should. I used Acronis for years, but the more they "improved" it, the less I like it. Now using Backupper Pro and like it much better

If your system is working good, I would leave it.

With 8.1 you have the ability to apply incremental security updates or not.

Win10 does not allow that and Win10PRO will let you bypass them but not without a workaround.

I can't imagine 10 bringing you any better performance, personally but I am far from an expert there.

My Win10PRO and HDN works great.....PT12.5.1

FWIW, I have had several friends tell me that 10 is smoother/faster, but I just am not a fan and am still on 7 for my main machine. About to do a new build and will probably bite the bullet and go Win 10 for it

The only update that caused me any trouble was a Nvidia video driver a week after win10 first came out and as a result Nvidia stopped issuing new drivers through Microsoft. Windows 10 Home allows uninstalling updates and also allows rolling back to the last version. It's really a non-problem.

My backup system is an SSD with the previous version of everything including Windows 8.1. I think it works about as well as 10 but I hate the interface.

Agreed. The first thing I installed after moving to W8 was Classic Shell, so I've never, ever had to work in Metro hell.

I've had no problems with Win 10 x64 over the last year running PT 12.5.2. Very stable on my i7 machine, Asus MB, Nvidia graphics card. Many sessions spanning multiple drives, not a glitch. Also use UAD plugs and multiple VIs like Omnisphere, Trillion, Superior Drummer, EZ Drummer and Slate Drums for writing.
