Default PT 9 and Multiple Interfaces

I've been reading the new reference guide and I see that in HD you need to restart your PT system after changing interfaces. My question:

In a non HD system can I switch between different interfaces being active inputs without having to change the output?

For example: I have an 11 rack and a 2626. I'm tracking guitar through the 11r and monitoring without headphones. I then want to record a small kit and use my 2626. I will need to use cans because I don't have a separate tracking room, but my signal out of pro tools is 11r>headphone amp>monitors. If I switch to the 2626 as my primary I/O can I still leave the output through the 11r?

You can use Core Audio aggregate if all your device drivers support it. Avid's drivers for their hardware do no support aggregate device.

I saw that. I guess my question is can I change that on the fly?

Hey, you have no idea the power us 11R/profire2626 users have. I bought the profire before the 11R came out and then got the 11 rack for "latency free" tracking of guitars. Which as we all know, does not exist on the 11R out of the box. So i started thinking. My profire has a zero latency(or damn close) dsp mixer. Why not patch the 11R outputs s/pdif or analog into the profire and enjoy latency free monitoring while still using the profire inputs.

So, basically to get the best of both...
Use your profire as the main interface.
Patch the 11R into it, I prefer s/pdif because you can keep your analog inputs free. The box will allow you to choose a wet/dry combo of 2 signals via s/pdif or a wet stereo.
Then plug in your 11R via usb which will allow you to track with embedded settings and control the unit from the PT window.

Done!

If you have any questions about the setup feel free to PM me.

Good Luck

Hi.

So I cant use my headphones on the 11R + the headphones output on my mac pro?
The thing is that I would like to be able to record a small band live, but that is impossible.

I hoped that I could use the headphones on mac Pro + 11R headphones and then Profire2626 Headphones. If I could then I would have 4 headphone outputs.

Thx

If you don't need 4 discreet HP mixes, just buy a headphone amp.. many are under a 100.00 and have 4-8 headphone outs.. ff

Can you mention any good ones?
And are those connected through 11R or USB?

Thank you so much!

Now that Pro Tools 9 has been realesed I dont really need to put my money in an HD system:
So.. I would like to have like 8 Inputs/outputs + 11R and 4-8 headphone outputs.

I am using Steven Slate Drums and R td9kx for the drums.
I need 4 inputs for acguitars, 1 for bass, 2 for vocals + 11R for elguitars.

The profire has 2 headphone outs that you can assign so you have 2 separate mixes. then you can assign a third mix to any 2 outputs and patch them into a headphone amp. this will give you 3 separate mixes, one with as many outputs as the headphone amp has. You can also do more mixes if you get a headphone amp that has more than one input that you can assign to whichever headphone out you want. The profire is a pretty sweet device, read your manual.
