Default How to link Stereo Pan Automation

I have a stereo track where I've linked the pan controls. When I go in and write automation for the left side, shouldn't the right side reflect that same automation, since the controls are linked? If not, what's the trick to making the happen?

Thanks.

Depending on the type of linking you select. Also make sure to activate both pan automation lanes for said track.

I've only seen one type of linking the pan controls, and there doesn't appear to be any options other than activating the link button (see attached image).

Also, not sure what you mean by "activate both pan automation lanes". They should be activated by default if the track is active, shouldn't they? If you meant to select both lanes, I tried that with no luck.

Thanks for your help.

There are two ways, direct and opposed

To use the direct linking I think both panners have to be in the same position before recording the automation.
Like you said, the lanes should be active by default but it's good practice to show them and make sure they are, I can see you did in the screenshot.

Easiest solution probably is to copy R and paste to L.

Both panners don't have to be in the same position.
The options are link and link+inverse pan. What you want is the second (link + inverse pan). Link has both panners moving the same direction. Link+inverse pan has them moving opposite directions.

The panners do remember their original starting point, if you will. So with link+inv pan turned on, say you have the left at center and the right at far right, moving the left panner to the far left, the right will do nothing (because it is already far right -- the furthest it can go). But then, if you pan the left panner to the center again, the right will still do nothing because that was the left's original pan position. It isn't until you start moving the left panner right of center that the right panner will start moving towards the left.

Yes they do if you want both panners to make the exact same movements (which is what I understand the OP want to do), otherwise the movements would be relative.
