I'm already running 12.5.1 on it. Video stutter is gone...but the noise glitch is back....a bit better though....it's Siri screaming my CPU usage.

Care to share what it is you don't like about HFS+?

Also: APFS, or Apple File System, is to be released as a Developer Preview with macOS 10.12. APFS is scheduled to ship in 2017. My guess would be as the native filsystem with macOS 10.13 and iOS 11. (Apple Developer site)

HFS+ and APFS are filesystems; a fundamental part of an OS. While APFS is the "shiny new" one, HFS+ is the proven one. Let us hope Apple gets it together and that this change won't cause any trouble for the developers of Avid - for us Pro Tools users. We AV people are very dependent on these layers of the OS. Millisecond timing is of importance.

I'm afraid this complete change of native filesystem could introduce bigger problems than, but very much like, the video stuttering we have since Apple upgraded the related video subsystems. This time a change could be affecting HDD/SSD read and writes.

Don't get me wrong. I'm actually excited. Not sure though I'll be running the APFS first generation on any of my audio drives.

it's a preview, it won't be forced on us for a while. If Apple are following the same pattern as with HFS+ then this is about the next major revision of macOS, whenever that comes. Sierra isn't that.

Current Limitations

As a developer preview of this technology, there are currently several limitations:
  • Startup Disk: APFS volumes cannot currently be used as a startup disk.
  • Case Sensitivity: Filenames are currently case-sensitive only.
  • Time Machine: Time Machine backups are not currently supported.
  • FileVault: APFS volumes cannot currently be encrypted using FileVault.
  • Fusion Drive: Fusion Drives cannot currently use APFS.

HFS+ is a 30 year old technology not designed for todays storage needs.

If you read the docs it sounds like they took what they liked from ZFS and then added layers that they wanted.

Of course I wouldn't recommend running it on anything yet (in fact its container only right now for testing)..

but it will eventually replace HFS and all its annoying quirks..

Absolutely. HFS+ is a bit of toy compared to using ZFS in server environments. It's a pity that Apple never adopted ZFS, they got close.

Having snapshots alone will be fantastic. Giving really great backup options (I could imagine CCC integrating with snapshots). And hopefully finally a proper optimization for Flash (writing metadata etc. more efficiently for Flash storage).

Don't upgrade to MacOS 11. End of issue. Although I know the DUC will be filled with people soon screaming as to why PT 12.5.x isn't compatible with the MacOS developer beta... update at your own peril, but for the enjoyment of the rest of us. I'll bring the popcorn.
