Default Digital noise S/PDIF and MPX 550

Hi,
finally got a MPX 550 working with ProTools LE via the S/PDIF on a Audiomedia 3.Great,but they is a lot of digital noise ie pop and crackle coming into the Lexicon MPX 550 via the lefthand channel from the S/PDIF output on the Audiomedia 3 card.Input metering on the MPX 550 show that the level of the lefthand channel is miles above the righthand channel and is cliping.Any ideas

System
G4 800 MHz
Audiomedia 3 card
ProTools LE v5.2.1
Lexicon MPX 550

Cheers
