Default 5300 series in a xw8400? Does it work with PT?

Has anybody successfully tried one of the Intel Xeon 5300 Quad-core series processors in a HP xw8400 workstation? The official compato list only advises to use 5100 series processors with PT 7.3 (HD3).

I tried, a while ago, a 5355 in a DIY PT computer project, which wasn't compatible at all (had to return it), but I doubt that the cpu was the weak link in that system. (The playback engine showed 4 processors for RTAS.)

Nobody?
I understand: The risk of jeopardizing a perfectly working system with a cpu that is still expensive and maybe is incompatible, is really high and not really woth it?!

If you can find a place with a good return policy, why not give it a shot? Then come back and let the rest of us know how it worked

If I had an HP XW8400 and found a store that would guarantee a return if it didn't work, I wouldn't have any problems at least trying it. What do you have to lose? If it turns out to be unstable just return the new processor and replace with the original.

I know next to nothing about a HP XW8400, and I assume you're saying that the processor is compatible with that MB. If not, you should contact HP and find out if that processor is compatible. I highly recommend *not* installing that CPU unless you're absolutely certain it's compatible. Nothing like failing the "smoke test" when firing it up.

If your only question whether Pro Tools will work with it, odds are that Digidesigns compatibility page is just out of date.

The compatibillity with the xw8400 is out of the question - that works!
My interest is merely if PT is compatible or not with a 5300

What's the issue then? What's the worse that will happen?

Here's from an earlier post: "If I had an HP XW8400 and found a store that would guarantee a return if it didn't work, I wouldn't have any problems at least trying it. What do you have to lose? If it turns out to be unstable just return the new processor and replace with the original."

I've built my last two TDM machines. The first was an Asus P4C800-E, and I just finished upgrading to a Tyan Tiger K8WE Quad core. Surely upgrading the CPU on your HP is as easy as either of those two MBs. It would be about a ten minute job on either of those computers.

I'm just curious as to why it's much of an issue. Sorry if I'm out of line here. Good luck!

Doesn't replacement of CPU's breake the warranty?
