Any "downside" to routing to multiple output ports?
In I/O setup I am routing my main output channel pair to 2 different audio interface output ports. My OUT 1-2 master fader now has the "+" sign indicating that it is governing multiple outputs. I'm using this setup so I can send the mix to 2 different pairs of monitors on different outputs and it "seems" to be working great.
I'm slightly paranoid because I never really hear anyone doing this kind of routing. Is there any downside or problem that this can cause? Latency etc? Any insight would be appreciated! |

No, nothing at all. It all happens within the mixer and there is no additional latency. I use it all the time.

Thanks Janne! That's reassuring. What types of situations have you used that kind of routing for?

Creating monitor mixes. I'm not going into the most complicated things, but even a simple situation where I listen to -say- outputs 1-2 and I need to copy that same signal to another room or another headphone, that's an easy way to do it.

Makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to explain!

FWIW, I often use dual outputs on my main mix aux track to print stuff in the background.

Hah, my first thought was analog tape but you might have something else in mind

Re: Any "downside" to routing to multiple output ports?
We do this all the time in live sound. Sending the main Left-Right to multiple outputs for recording or program feeds, or multiple recording feeds.
It would be WAY easier if Protools had a real matrix function. But it doesn't because why bother, right?

Re: Any "downside" to routing to multiple output ports?
Because of the control surfaces. Pro Control had a very good matrix (and it has been discontinued), but S3/S6 don't so that's why.
