Default Playback only monitor? when using external mixer

I have a small recording booth I use for vocals. I am using a small mixer to feed the headphones and direct monitor when recording to avoid latency. My preamp is connected to both the mixer and 003 input. Mixer also recieves output 1+2 from the 003.

When recording I need to mute the recorded track so I don't double monitor, but if I want to listen to the recoring I need to unmute the track and remute it to record again.

Is there a way to monitor playback only in PT? , so that if I record arm a track it will not monitor the input to 1+2, but still playback audio from that track?

Since you are running a quad core, you should be able to run at a buffer setting of 64. I would just send an aux feed of the vocal to the mixer (in addition to the L&R feeds) instead of using the direct feed from the preamp. I have never had anyone feel latency at the 64 buffer setting. 64 samples out of 44,100 samples per second is not a lot of time(unless my math is incorrect here).

you have a q6600, you should be able to just set your hw buffer to 64 and be done with it and just monitor the pro tools output. otherwise....

both input only and auto input are gonna feed the pro tools output when monitoring. you would have to mute the track in pro tools to record w/o monitoring it through the pt output.

the other way would be to use another output of your 003. output your music bed to 1-2 output your vocal on 3. and the input of your pre on 4. so 4 channels on your mixer. then mute output 3 when tracking.

Yeah, this is how I did it up until recently on all my music projects.

I switched to using the mixer for monitoring because I have to do some voice over recordings for TV and PT had some trouble running with the video online at 64 and even 128 at times.
I get more stability with 512 or 1024 and no latency this way. But I need to mute/unmute all the time, so the director and me can listen to the takes while the talent is still in the booth. Not much of an issue though.
As far as I can remember analog tape machines have 3 monitoring modes - input, auto and playback, but I never had to use PB until now.

Just wondering if PT has a 'playback only monitoring' mode hidden somewhere?

I find that another way to do it is record the overdubs on a seperate trk and just drag and drop,no latency.
It works great and you dont have to tax your system with 64 buffers.
