tech question
Excuse my ignorance. I'm a little confused on how bit rates and sample rates are working.
For example; Yamaha 01v is 20bit and sample rate of up to 48khz. How does it communicate with the 001 with 24 bit and the same sample rate. Does the bit rate cause any problems being different. Anyone, Beular........Anyone |

Re: tech question
Recording digitally into a 24-bit PT session from a 20-bit (or 16-bit) source will not cause problems. Zeros are simply filled in for the four least significant bits in the digital word representing each sample.
Potential problems arise when you go digitally in the other direction, from greater to lesser bit-depths - that's what dithering (and espec. the newer, superior Pow-R Dither) is for - psychoacoustic mojo that dissimulates as best as possible the loss of detail (i.e., greater quantization errror) at the lower target resolution. |
