Do you guys leave your compuers on?
I just picked up a 40" NEC monitor but for some reason my computer won't boot up with it connected. (Stops with an Express gate screen. I guess my video card doesn't agree with it *scratches head* I have tried everything)
But it still boots fine to the old monitor and then I can manually switch it to the NEC and it works no problem. But in order to save time I am just leaving the pc on. I have a UPS and if I have a power failure I will have to switch monitors again, but... I was thinking that Tom said he leaves his machine on. Do any of the rest of you do this as well?

Re: Do you guys leave your compuers on?
Can it be a driver or resolution problem ?
Try removing your old screen from the device manager befor connecting the new screen. I would also turn of any power saving functions if not already done. |

Re: Do you guys leave your compuers on?
Could be, but I am not that worried about it right now. And I *think all power saving options are off, but I'll give it a shot when I feel like tearing everything apart again. I was smart enough to test and find this issue before I set everything up but I am back to tracking for the week.
But I was still wondering about the harm in just leaving it all on.

Re: Do you guys leave your compuers on?
no longer... SSD boot drive does have its advantages... only reason i ever
left it on was due to slow boot up... some systems experience memory leak as certain programs dont come back in full from wake up... cripples system resources, slowly but it does happen... i remember having issues with it back in my XP days... now i just dont bother... leaving it all on does take a hit on the life-expectancy of your system's components though..

Others say thermal stress can be an issue when turing it on and off (because of material expansion/contraction from heating up and cooling down). Both sound like somewhat valid issues to me. But Im more afraid of power spikes/surges and blackouts than wearout and thermal stress. |

Re: Do you guys leave your compuers on?
Since my old nubus mac started burning right behind me I always switch off! I ALWAYS think of it when I am leaving work. That my paranoia.
Anyway: Protools works better if you restart the machine from time to time Ale

Re: Do you guys leave your compuers on?
Yup, I turn mine off every nite as well. Even though I have a UPS on the system(something everybody NEEDS). Since we are told to set drives to never spin down, using an SSD for system might be okay, but it wouldn't help all my recording/sample drives. I would revisit the graphics driver, or maybe your hookup. I am using a 1080P 32" LCD TV as my main monitor and I discovered on the first day that the VGA connection won't handle 1920x1080, so I got a DVI-HDMI adapter to feed an HDMI input of the TV(which works fine). Many of the newer cards already have an HDMI out too, so maybe its a good excuse to get a new card

i doubt switch on thermal issues are that big a deal... my system is incredibly properly cooled... i just cant see it being a problem... the most sensitive piece is my CPU and the damn thing barely hits 43deg cel. when fully driven and over-clocked.! its designed to handle above 90deg. in temps.. also i have a very high end military spec ASUS mobo, their sabertooth line... i always shut it off now... as posted above.. pro tools works better from fresh start... it has to do with proper memory dump clearance.. no old info stuck anywhere in the system... specially if you use HD10's new RAM-session LOAD-up you will find the sessions are much smoother from clean start... seems logical to me...
