Your rig will be WAY more powerful than any Mac mini. At least you didn't waste your resources doing this stuff.

My 3930k is in a rack case that has also includes 4 hard drives and an HDN PCIE card, and of course could spank that system with 3 cores tied behind its ram!! I know what I will stick with!!

I have every thing but the HDN and HD io x16x16 (one day maybe - I can't justify the price)

Just wanted to chime in. I finished my build. Everything seems to be running fine. I did have to do some modifications to the case top to get it to close with that CPU cooler. I went ahead and installed one exhaust and one intake fan in that top as well. Now I have 3 intake case fans and one exhaust. I'm only using one internal fan that came with the cooler. Temps so far have been between 35 and 50c.

I'm still in the process of installing software and doing backups. Its times like this when I wish everyone used Ilok. Its going to take for ever to authorize all these plugins.

I was wondering if Mykhal would mind posting his BIOS settings. Iv only done the required avid tweaks and messed with the XMP profile but I'm kind of lost on what to do next.

I, too, am leaning strongly towards i7-4930K plus a Gigabyte LGA-2011 mb & 4x4gigs of DDR3-2400. With all the solid systems, I'm just wanting a stable tracking rig with our HDN, 4x192 I/Os, UA Quads, and the plug library.

This processor and the quad-channel ram should nail it.....

Ok guys, I was looking on eBay the other day for a friend wanting to upgrade his computer on the cheap to an i7 920 and came across this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:X:AAQ:US:1123

It appears the dual cpu benchmark is higher than the i7 3820 however this machine only has a single cpu. Seeing as the z400 is on the avid compatibility list is this a good deal for my friend who already owns a wd black and w7pro? Secondly I'm not familiar with the intel xeon line of processors does this single l5639 compare to an i7 920?

Yeah I would say so

That's a six core Xeon processor

I would send an email to the seller and ask them what was refurbished ?motherboard CPU just some cabling and find out a little more details

Looks interesting, but I have 1 concern. It says 12GB of RAM, but the photo clearly shows 4 sticks. I don't recall anyone making 3GB sticks, so I assume its a pair of 2GB sticks and a pair of 8GB sticks, so it might be best to pull the smaller sticks, since mis-matched RAM often hurts performance. Might be a good rig on a budget

Default Re: i7 Builds - Specs and Results

Ordering parts in a few days for a new computer to build, so I'm searching the site.

Q: re Hard Drive for operating system. I was looking forward to using a new SSD, but see people gravitating toward Western Digital Caviar Black drives. I've always been a Seagate or Maxtor guy, never cared for WD products, but would like to use a SSD and not have to defrag. Any comments ???

Currently I've been using XP-32 bit with a LE002 version 8, Certainly time for an upgrade, but it looks like my 002 doesn't support WIN 7 64 Bit ???

I'm now thinking of an Eleven Rack so it can be compatible with WIN 7, comes with Version 10, can upgrade to 11. but I'd really rather keep using my 002, on a new machine, with new operating system ???

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
