Default conflict in \"troubleshooting tips\"

While configuring my laptop I found the following conflict in "general troubleshooting tips":

Quote:
- To Adjust Processor Scheduling Performance:
Choose Start > Control Panel. In Classic View, launch System. Click the Advanced tab. Under the Performance section, click the Settings button. Click the Advanced tab. Under the Processor scheduling section, select the Background Services option . Under the Memory Usage section, select System cache option . Click OK twice. You will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Display Performance:

Another way to free up resources is to minimize the amount of processing Windows needs for display. This can be done in a few ways. First, right-click on My Computer and select 'Properties.' Go to the Advanced tab and select 'Settings' under the Performance section. In the Visual Effects tab, select 'Adjust for best performance' - this will change the way that Windows looks somewhat (to that nice 'classic' feel). Then click on the Advanced tab and set both Processor Scheduling and Memory Usage to 'Programs.' Close the Performance Options and System Properties windows by clicking 'OK.'

the first tip tells us to set scheduling to: "background" & memory usage to "system cache"
while the second tip tells us to set both to programs!!!!!

what should I do?????

To tell you the truth, I can't tell a difference between the 2 settings personally. I have run for months on both settings at different times.

Maybe it depends on the computer as to which works better.

Well, from what I'm interpreting from the two statements, I think they're suggesting using "programs" in you want to free up more memory? Perhaps "background services" helps minimize cross-talking between the CPU and other processes more, thus enhancing reliability? Not entirely sure here, but it seems that statement two is specifically addressing freeing up resources, while statement one is addressing general conflict issues? Statement two seems to be addressing video issues too?

Personally, I have no idea how setting the option to "Programs" instead of "background services" is going to "minimize the amount of processing windows needs for display." Got me on that one.
