In my experience, it's a far cry from impartial. I worked for a corporation whose CEO was ranked in the Top 10 worst CEO's in several publications, yet he always managed to get a raise.
All companies over a certain size seem to have members of the board to be an exclusive club. And many are members in multiple boards of directors.

It's been a lot in media the last 20 years or so - that any CEO getting fired get a golden parachute that is something like 10-20 lifetime achievements of an ordinary worker - for doing a crap job, sometimes only for a couple of months.

Probably directors of the boards vote this through hoping they are elected as CEO in any company, all playing golf together, and next to go with silly money compensation. They are all yes-men due to this. Seems unstopable even with all this media attention.

Annual shareholders meetings are electing chairman of the board, which in turn select members of the board, that in turn elect CEO. This might differ a bit depending on legislation in different countries.

But to change this shareholders meetings is the place to do it. But shareholders are too often big trust funds which have board of directors that golf together with CEO's.

Board of untouchables....

Seems like you could be talking about what Jack Black calls 'The Man' and describing the principle underlying tenet of capitalism .... the rich looking after themselves while feeding off the poor.

Hence the attempts to string us along with 'jam tomorrow promises' that will likely turn out to be just another bowl of 'gruel', not even made with milk!

I prefer to measure my net worth in other than monetary terms ;-)

Hence why I retired (with a company pension) at 50, and have since completed two degrees in music production while being a two/three days per week 'house engineer/producer' in a studio that ranks customer satisfaction and product quality higher than profitability.

Although, to be fair, the studio life for me is only possible because the owner covers the running costs of the studio from income generated through live work, airplay royalties and merchandise sales, easing the pressure on session fee rates ;-)

My net worth is calculated by assessing the 'contentment' factor (sometimes) evident within my close-knit family.

Cool life story, Nigel.. Glad you retired to something you love!! What a great thing for any of us.. My main point is that you have 'all those opportunities and choices' you do - because you're a 'free agent' in a 'capitalistic context' - not in a socialist context where so much of your life and potential to make choices governing your income potential is shaped by "the state". Capitalism can get a bad name these days.. I was just making a passing social commentary.. Crawling back under my rock now.. LOOL! Peace, bro!

I finished my degree in Music from 47-49 years old myself. Didn't appreciate it as much when I was in college the first time. Pro music industry captured my love and attentions over becoming a music teacher.. So I left my degree studies in Senior year '84 to go on the road.. and to start my studio in the basement of a music store with a Fostex 8 tracks on 1/4 inch tape machine and a Tascam board and two cheap mics.. Within 5 years I was making real records and being nominated for/winning Grammys. Lived all my musical dreams before age 45.. So I had to get some 'new dreams'.. LOOL!!

+1! Capitalism done right is the most powerful tool known to man.
Socialism just runs out of other peoples money before too long.

Hmmm...having lived in both I can say that socializm while great on paper does not and cannot work in reality today. Human beings per se cannot by definition work as equals. At least not yet. Everybody will only look after themselves even if the neighbour will suffer because of such (in)action.

I am a very big fan of Star Trek. Very. It is my wish that humanity will one day be able to reach the level portraied in the series. And the political orientation of "the United States of Earth" : communism/socialism.

This is a pure food for thought reply and does not mean that I'm pro commy; but the fact remains that capitalism as is today only makes the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Sad, but realistic world. Ave!
