Default Just doing the math to upgrade to HDX

Hi,

This is to replace my HD6 and 3 interfaces to give me all the I/O I need. Plus computer and control surface!

All UK £ prices

HD3 and 1 blue interface to 1 HDX card and HD 8-8-8 ........ £5278
1 extra HDX card. 1 HD 16-16 and 1 extra HD 8-8-8 .......... Approx £15000
New computer as Harpertown is not compatible ................. Approx £1500
New control surface to replace control 24 not supported after 10..... £5000

Total so far ..... £26.778

Plus the numerous plugin updates needed £?
New cabling for the interfaces and control surface £?

Maybe recoup a bit on the chassis and 3 remaining cards. £2000

Umm don't think I'll be buying a new HDX system in a hurry, if ever!

So to think I would invest into HDX and if that's the reason the PT9 HD upgrade is £740 well I just to see the logic in stinging loyal HD owners for the software only option.

Yes of course I want to continue with the latest PT features the same as I have done since buying HD, 8 years ago. And the same as mix owners did for many years after HD was released! But £740 just to keep the software up to date

Yea, the outrageous software update prices are nothing more than Avid thinking we are all incredibly stupid. They assume we will see how expensive the software upgrade is and buy the hardware package instead.

But, they have total disregard for those who will not be wanting, needing or simply cannot afford the hardware and want to upgrade the software only.

Thanks Avid for treating us loyal HD users with such respect.

Chris, you're clearly not hip to the new marketing strategy.

Without warning you must suddenly charge your clients (even the ones you like) 4 times the amount you normally charge.
Flushed with this new income you can safely go ahead and make your new purchases.

There you go.
You musician types are not so good at marketing are you now!
Silly sausages!

So as an HD2 accel user, 2 192 i/o control 24, still using PT 8, maybe I should just consider going up to ver. 9 so I can use Lion and a newer Mac down the road.

I was seriously swithering on migrating over to PT systems until last Friday.

I'm on Cubase 6 now, working very well and doing everything I want, although I was lacking plugin power.

Given Avid's clearly disgusting treatment of their loyal customers, there's not a chance in hell I'm putting my hard earned cash into and Avid system.

Instead I'll stick with Steinberg and buy the fastest computer I can with the money (and keep upgrading that way and I'll still be better off).

Al

Chris do you need the second HDx card?
the HDx can do 64 i/o (2 chains of 32 like the HD Native)

Are the prices really that much different than when we moved from Mix to HD? I think they are less actually. although I would have like to have seen a straight card for card swap! HD3 -> HDX3. I wonder how the performance increase from HD3 to HDX compares to Mix3 -> HD3 accel. And actually I don't remember the software (PT6) being compatible with both platforms. was it? Perhaps a lot of development time went into making it functional with both HDX and HD. I want the PT10HD upgrade to be much less then it is just like I want everything to be cheaper that I'd like to buy, but Avid's mistake here isn't so much pricing things too high, but not explaining their pricing structure fully and what we're getting compared to the past and possibly from their competitors as well. I imagine that a software upgrade that includes new hardware functionality would be more expensive but I have seen nothing from Avid explaining any of their reasoning in detail. I think that would have satisfied most folks. Now its probably too late. I won't be thinking of upgrading PT anyway until they get caught up with the composer side of things... folder tracks, better VI handling, etc... writing in Logic until those sorts of things are incorporated.

Quite a lot less if I compare to upgrading my Mix3 rig to Accel3.
But the upgrade this time is to only HDX1 ...and it seems a bit confusing how much more powerful the new card is.

There were no real alternatives back then...but now it's a different scenario.

Personally I'll sit tight for a while...my 8.1 is still smooth
