iTunes, browsers not making sound, PT10 works fine

I recently crossgraded to PT10 working with a 002 rack on a mac pro 2009 mtn lion. As of right now, iTunes simply won't play a song, and youtube plays but is silent. The odd part is Pro Tools works like a champ. When I launch sys preferences sound and check the output, sure enough, firewire 002 is selected, but it freezes (thinking about it?) for about 30 seconds.
Suffice it to say, I suspect there to be some kind of software-related issue causing my non-PT programs to not communicate with 002 correctly. I suppose a 30 minute drive to fry's electronics for another 400 to 800 firewire cable is in store for me, but my gut says it will change nothing.
Brand new here. Up until a month ago, i was using a g5 running LE 7, and this whole computer/pro tools/plugin upgrade process has been a little overwhelming. Thanks in advance

If you want to keep Pro Tools happy, the best suggestion is to stick to the onboard audio for everything not PT. Then get a cable to go from the onboard audio out to the alt source ins on the 002 for monitoring.

Yeah just lower your standards! Don't worry about that extra cable running out of the front of your mac and having to switch the button every single time, every day, day in and day out. If you want a system that actually works seemlessly with your setup, then use another product! Unbelievable....

What do you have selected for 'Use this device for sound output' in the Audio Devices window of Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup?
