Default BUG: PT-M 8.05 Crashes when Previewing effects as non-administrator

BUG: PT-M 8.05 Crashes when Previewing effects as non-administrator

I submitted this bug months ago, along with a few others. I haven't seen the bugs fixed in 8.05 nor have I been contacted for more details, so I'm posting it here in

the hopes of getting some help. Perhaps in the way of a CS update, hack or a workaround?

This bug occurs when logged in as a non-administrator on Windows 7 64 bit.

This behavior was introduced around 8.03?? I'm pretty certain that this particular bug doesn't occur in 8.0

M-Audio Fast Track Pro, driver ver. Install: 6.0.7 - Driver: 5.10.0.5134

Steps to reproduce:
-------------------

1. Log in as a non-administrator
2. Create new PT session.
3. Import an audio file into a new track.
4. Select a region.
5. Select AudioSuite->Pitch Shift->Pitch Shift
6. Press the Preview button.
7. Press the Preview button again to stop the preview.
8. Pro-Tools will crash/stop responding with one or more of the following messages

-------------------------------

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Prog...

R6025
-pure virtual function call

-------------------------------

-------------------------------
Access violation occurred, unable to read location: 0x6C6C642E at address: 0x10035613 in module: CFnd.dll
-------------------------------

-------------------------------
Access violation occurred, unable to read location: 0x00000004 at address: 0x073A5EB6 in module: ProTools.dll
-------------------------------

(Note: This crash will occur with other AudioSuite previews too)

Because I support a full lab of Pro-Tools (26 stations) in a shared lab space at an educational institution, it is important that the users remain non-administrators.
This has been the only BUG of real importance that we've run into related specifically to non-administrator privileges.

Also note: I've tried many fresh installations on different machine configurations.

Please help!

Not really a bug - Avid recommends running Pro Tools as an administrator.

I ran into this same problem using PT 8.0.5, when i upgraded PT.
But I was doing Normalization/Gain Change

And When I pressed Preview..... Booom CRASH..
Happens all the time.

So I down-graded back to v8.0.4 and it stopped the crashing.

But of course, I was back to the previous problems I had, which was why I did the upgrade to v8.0.5

Staff in music stores are starting to name PT "The glitchy software"
Every time I go into a music store and ask staff questions.

This problem has been happening to us since moving to Windows 7 and upgrading past 8.0.

There have been numerous important changes since 8.0. Windows 7 and non-administrator users are musts in our shared-space labs.

Avid has published this guide, "Pro Tools Windows NonAdmin Guide", which was geared toward XP:

http://akmedia.digidesign.com/suppor...uide_56150.pdf

So, Avid doesn't seem entirely opposed to non-administrators. To my knowledge they haven't published one for Win 7.

I understand that recommendation for a home or studio user. But in an educational environment, administrator privileges is a non-starter. As I mentioned above, the crash did not occur in 8.0, it drifted in with the .0x updates, so it was working at some point.

I see - you're in a lab environment. All I can find is that here it says "Run as Administrator" is a "Required Optimization" for Windows 7. Maybe try this configuration which will always run the Application as an Administrator for any user.

Unfortunately, UAC still prompts for an admin username and password when you try to elevate privileges (which is a good thing). I think the ProTools team simply has to work on a fix or suggest a feasible workaround for an educational lab environment. Run as Admin and disabling UAC are a bit more than an "optimization".... You shouldn't have to undermine the security of your computer to run a single application. No other piece of software we use has this problem.
