I just wonder why they would say that 24/96k would not be a good choice for the consumer......FWIW

Well probably because the file is too voluminous for the consumer compared to the low quality mp3 that they are used to. A 24 bit 96 k song can easily take up to 50 megs and more for a 3 to 4 minute song. While the mp3 only takes 2 to 5 megs depending on the encoding quality.

So on a consumer stand point where they want to stuff the max amount of songs into their player, having 24/96 files ain't for them.

Yeah I read that - he mastered the song so it would sound good when they used the apple encoder - sounds like a bunch of tests for me

Because it's true, there is absolutely no point in 24/96 for the consumer! The only difference between 24bit and 16bit is 48dB of dynamic range, 16bit already provides at least 30dB more dynamic range than the most dynamic of commercial releases, so what's the point of another 48dB on top of this for the consumer? And for the consumer there is no benefit 96kHz. In fact in exhaustive tests by the AES even golden-eared mastering engineers could not tell the difference between 96k and 44.1k in a double blind test, so if the best ears in the world can't hear a difference what point is there for the consumer?

24/96 for the consumer is just marketing hype, as professionals or producers of music we should really be better informed than consumers and know the difference between fidelity and marketing hype.

Also it should change how the mastering house does it's finals - maybe one for discs and one for itunes??
