Default Simple Network Mac to Mac?

Well not exactly, it's through a couple of gigabit switches. What I don't understand about the OSX operating system, as opposed to OS 8.6 or 9, is what you are being asked when you try to connect.
Besides the fact that I've forgotten my passwords, I think, I still don't get what it's asking me when I try to connect one G4 to the other G4 both running 10.28. When you choose the other mac, you get a drop down that asks for your username and password. Is it the UN and pw of the host computer or the desired computer, or is it some other UN and password that you might have assigned just for this transaction. I have given usernamesa and Passwords just to each computer and when I try to connect the two none of the UN or PW's seem to work. So we have to end of using a third windows computer to host the files--both G4's can see it. I'd like the G4's to talk directly but I've lost the magic to make that happen. Any help?

it's the username and password of the computer ou are trying to log on to that you put in, you could put in any user and their password registered to that machine and just log in to it as if you were at the remote machine itself, or if you have set it up you could log on as a guest, and get access to the drop box.

yea, like he said, if you know the UN and PW of the comp you are connecting to it's just like OS9 where the hard drive will mount on the desktop.

Wether or not the drive mounts on your desktop is a Finder pref so it might not show up on the desktop but will on the finder window. Also in 10.2x you need to use the pull down "connect to server", the network icon in the finder window doesn't work 99% of the time (in 10.3x it's the opposite, use the network icon in the Finder window). Also if it's all "in the family" I would log on as the main account on the remote machine. Anything else and you may run in to Permissions issues that need to be re set.

Works smoother and faster than OS9 once you get the hang of it.

If you go to the USERS preferences you will be able to set one, or more, users and specify their passwords and level of access. (A user name is different than the computer's network name.) You will also need to make sure that the volumes you wish to share on each machine have permissions set on them to allow each user to use them.

REBOOT after making username or password changes, as the changes will not be in effect until then! You should be able to connect via appletalk and use remote volumes, including your OS9 volumes. I have had best results using the GO/Connect to Server menu command, either browsing to the machine or entering address directly. If you know the OSX machine name of the remote system, in the GO/Connect To Server window enter "apl://NAME", or instead of the machine's name you can use its IP address, such as "apl://192.168.1.1". If the remote machine is OS9 you must use the IP address anyway. This is exactly like connecting to a Windows machine (peer to peer), except that instead of appletalk you use Samba and the first three letters of your command should be "smb", as in "smb://NAME" or "smb://192.168.1.1". OSX connects to the requested machine then asks you for a username and password. This can be any of the ones you have already set up on the machine you are trying to connect to.
I hope this helps.
