All I want to do is have the program running smoothly so I can record basic songs for demos. I'd also like to eventually use media composer for videos of songs I've recorded.

There had to be a way to make this happen.

RUNNING

MAC MINI 2012
1TB SPINMER 5400 RPM
1TB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
RECENTLY DOWNLOADED EL CAPITAN OSX 10.11.6 OSX
8GB OF RAM
Avid 11 rack

Software I'm hoping to use

Ez drummer
Ez keys
Media composer.

Can someone please explain how to make this happen. I don't understand why this program is so difficult to run.

As always any help is appreciated and thank you for the time!!!

Have you looked at the compatibility page here: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...tibility-Chart
Besides that El Crapitan is probably the worst OSX Apple ever put out. Where did you download it from? Unless you got it from the App Store I'd be wary of it. Your computer specs are anemic at best - that 5400 rpm system drive is way too slow for PT work. It's not a simple change-out but if you're serious you'll want to swap the spinner out from an ssd.

Something that would really help is exact version numbers of the software you're wanting to run. Different revisions of s/w have different operating system requirements. And if you're staying with PT10 the latest OSX you can run is OSX 10.9.5

If I've had pro tools 10.3 before what free upgrades am I eligible for? Am I able to upgrade to 11 or 12?

There's no free upgrade. The re-buy-in to the current version of PT which is PT2018.4 is $299. That gets you a full year's upgrades and support. There's also the possibility of going to a subscription on a monthly basis.

Ok thank you for that.

I have begun downloading pro tools 10.3 and just received an error message saying that " pro tools cannot be installed because...an incompatible version of the OS was found. Pro tools 10.3.4 requires mac osx version 10.7 or higher.

I'm confused because I'm currently running 10.11.6 el Capitan.

Did you not read the compatibility page that was linked to earlier?

It tells you exactly what PT version run on what operating system.

I Ppreciate the help but I've decided I'm going to use a different DAW going forward. Too many issues with pro tools compatibility. It's turned into a money put. Do you know of a way to sell my current Ilok and license?

I've had enough of pro tools.

You're giving up too easily - you really need to have the will to see this through. You've been given the resources & advice needed. You'll be spending more money moving to another daw (unless you go to Reaper). You'll also be spending the same amount of money to change out that slow spinner hard drive in your Mini. Unless you change that out you'll have performance issues galore, not to mention all the headaches of learning another daw.

PT is NOT plug and play like Guitar Hero. Never has been and never will.

You could sell your license but who would buy such an old version of PT anyways? Keep the iLok because you're going to need it for other s/w.
