My SSD is Samsung 850 Pro ...so the PCIe adapter would not make a difference?

There's only one type of pcie adapter that I know of for your drive. The one I use is from OWC - the Accelsior card. If you're keeping that 850 Pro that's the card to get.

so from

2 x 2.4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon

to

Two x 3.46GHz 6-Core 'Westmere' Intel Xeon

Can be a meaningful difference? is the max can go

That will be a noticeable jump in performance

Oh yeah - definite difference for the good.

Are you still going to run the HDX card in the upgraded machine? With the seriously upgraded computing power unless you need the I/O the dsp kind of becomes superfluous.

Yes, I plan to run the HDX in the computer I want to upgrade .

Processor
at least 64 GB of Ram

I wonder if using the PCIe adaptor card for the SDD make sense now

Not shure I understand.
Upgrading the processor and ram without increasing disk read/write speeds to up to ten times would be nonsense!
(Edit: OK, perhaps I exaggerate, but it's at least 5x. And it would be the least costly part of the upgrade.)

If the previous bottleneck was insuffucient CPU power using CPU hungry plugin, then simply upgrading CPU would do the trick. If 32 GB memory is enough, upgrading it to a terabyte will do nothing.

However upgrading storage throughput from 100MB/sec to gigabyte range makes a world of difference. Also however slow SSD you are using you would be cutting "seek time" (=latency) off the equation. Same effect with internet connections; if you have mobile connection with 50-100ms ping (=latency) and 100Mbit/s throughput, it feels slower than a fiber connection with <5ms ping (=latency) and 10Mbit/sec throughput. Up until you start to download a gigabyte installer of course.

Thanks for the replies and help.

Do you mean that the Samsung 850 Pro is slow? or slow because is in the Hard Drive bay and not in a PCIe slot with an adapter card?
