Default Solo PFL setup recommendations

I'm on PTHD 8. I am used to mixing on the console, and have recently started doing more mixing entirely in the box. I'd like to solo channels while tracking (and mixing) without disturbing the performance or the headphone mixes, and PFL and AFL need an output of their own. How do you have this set up so you can solo on the fly while monitoring the master fader? Thanks!

I assume you have more than two outputs available.

and if you use a Avid interface you will need a small external mixer. if you use something like RME you can use the internal mixer to do that.

Use for example out 1-2 for your monitor out and out 3-4 for your PFL bus.
then you have to set your PFL bus to 3-4 in the I/O setup and PFL mutes to out 1-2.
when ever you press solo you will hear PFL from out 3-4 while 1-2 is muted.

out 1-2 and 3-4 should then be summed to your speakers/headphones via your mixer.

(you could also sum two signals by building your own summing stage with a couple of resistors... )

My work-around also allows me to solo effect returns and such. I add a send to all my tracks(in the last slot). These sends are all set to -0, prefade and are all muted. When I need to solo anything, I switch my monitor/source controller(Presonus Central Station) to a second input that is fed by these AUX sends over an extra pair of outputs from my interface. Then Ctrl-click on a send(or sends) to solo anything, without affecting the main mix or any headphone mixes. If you set this up on all your template sessions(and track templates), it becomes pretty simple(not as tedious as it sounds)
