Default Re: The Future of HDX?

Its this one off thinking that just amazes me. HDX - not a family, just a remake of what worked before with no vision to how it expands the products reach. And to make things more poignant, as AVID moves away from consumer level to focus only on Pro we have a full mbox line (consumer all the way), a free ipad app, a free PT First (totally consumer), the abandonment of the entire 002/003 concept (Prosumer) and $600/year or else to its pro users.

HDX should have been a family from conception:
HDX card as it is
1/2 HDX card in a flexible scalable box (TB, Ethernet, USB3 whatever on a card you can also update later)
1/2 or 1/3 HDX cards to go in AVID I/O frame with flexible connectors
004 with 1/4 HDX internal for $3K
TDM - HDX bridge (hardware and/or software for running legacy stuff with HDX)
Discontinue Mbox line!

Now your aimed at Pros and ProSumer with a flexible product line with full backwards compatibility. Expanding the reach of HDX would have greatly increased the likelihood of more DSP plugins. DSP and PT is the grab of this system - make it MORE accessible - not less.

The thinking of this company is just nothing like what "I" would do. Now maybe they are right that the Prosumers are not worth it (though I suspect this is the real growth market - people with money and small part time studios that love recording!). Maybe just servicing the Pros who really have no choice is the best play. So far - 3 straight quarters of missed earnings, vitriol like I have never seen before here, and stock price cut in half - all with raised expectations for yearly earnings. Not what I would call a happy picture. Not to mention all the resources that have been spent and continue to be spent to bring all this Collaboration stuff to market. So, "no" I don't buy that they don't have the resources - they do. Its where they are putting their efforts in I disagree with... for whatever thats worth... LOL!

I hear ya bro, especially the "damned if they do, damned if they dont". I know all things are much easier said than done. And i know there will always be haters and captain hindsights.

My whole reason for this thread was to pick everyones brains on ideas for a new PT HD interface/system, even though im sure thats ages away. But i cant help but think somewhere in a basement, an underpaid AVID R&D guy is siting there tinkering with new ideas and would maybe one day come to the duc and get ideas from us users on what could be next cool thing from AVID.

A guy can hope right

The last time i had to install a card into my computer for an audio interface was my oo1, and my delta 1010 before that. And not that i mind installing cards into my computers, as iv built every one iv owned. But id much rather just like to plug in a cable be done with it

Im just saying that i personally think that an external type of connection might better suit most users, even high end users better. Going back to my original idea. What if the new HD system was in its own expansion chassis, (avid could still make their pcie cards that you install in that), and just connected the expansion chassis to the host via TB or USB, or ethernet as some have suggested.

Most new mac users already have to have an expansion chassis if they want to run HDX. And what if your PC mobo only has 1 pcie slot avail for an HDX card? Then they would have to go out and try and get a TB card and an external chassis as well if they want an HDX 2 or more system. Having to jump through these "hoops" to run HDX might put some off. But then again, as someone mentioned, if AVID's HDX share is mainly post houses, then it doesnt really matter since they can build whatever they want/need to in order to get HDX to work with their systems. I just think that if AVID made it alittle bit easier to run HDX, their market share would open up and ALOT more project studios would buy into it. Currently the price difference between a native system and an HDX system is only $2k. Id rather save up the money and go HDX. But either way, im still having to go out and get an external chassis and TB card and cross my fingers that i can get it to work on my PC.

The new HD system can still be elite and the best in the world, but that doesnt mean that AVID cant make it more accessible to everyone

Edit: from what iv also heard, if you use "active" cables for usb c, you can get double the bandwidth/speed?
There are other companies such as RME have still been filling the PCIE market. I will take a PCIE card EVERYTIME over a "cabled" solution. The only benefit not using PCIE is based around portability. The list of negatives could go on quite a long ways based on more cabling/more points of failure/more power requirements/more space needs/etc. If you are on a stationary system, the benefits far outweigh the few portability benefits.

I dont see "ease of use" affecting the HDX market. It is a base 10k minimum to get into an HDX system and another 1500$ or so for a chassis is not going to really make or a break a deal if someone is looking to go that route. It is actually a 3-5k$ difference between an HDN and HDX. Anyone building or having a custom built PC for an HDX based system is going to get a system built around motherboard suitable for their needs. Since you are looking at another PC, you do not have to buy a chassis or deal with TB unless you really want to. But to your question, HDN TB works fine on PC, no reason HDX would not.

Now thats what im talking about! Someone else giving ideas on what AVID could do, to "better" the future HD market place and interface. If i added a cup holder, would that lighten the mood alittle?

+1 for what he said

Actually Eleven Rack uses the same DSP chip so it probably was conceived as a family before Avid decided to move away from prosumer hardware and cut their losses.

They should do a stand-up routine and charge admission, I'd pay to hear more jokes like this.
