Default Pro Tools not supporting latest 3 El capitans

Have been waiting for months for Avid to support Pro Tools 12 in El capitan 10.11. 3,

and still nothing, now we are on to Elcapitan 10. 11.6!

I need to update to El capitan 10 11,6 now, so unfortunately I have had buy Logic, sad to leave Pro Tools, I am sure I am not the only one with this problem.

You do understand that just because it's not 'officially supported' doesn't mean that it won't work, right?

I've been having pretty good luck with the latest PT12 and El Cap, aside from elastic audio weirdness and plugin delay issues, both of which have been around since v11 of PT.

Well having been burnt quite badly once there's no way I'd update my OS before it was officially supported.

And though I do understand the OP's frustration at being behind the latest OS, does anyone really "need" to update that frequently?

Just boldly switching DAWs is rarely an efficient move if you have any important studio work to do. If it's just a hobby or mostly for personal enjoyment, and you like learning a new DAW then go for it.

I use El Capitan with PT12 as well. I haven't seen any weirdness that I haven't seen in previous versions of PT on previous versions of OSX.

Make a drive clone and try it. If it doesn't work for you, restore from your clone.

Well you should have saved your 200 bucks. Pro Tools 12.5.2 works just fine under 10.11.6. There's no need to wait for Avid to officially support the latest OS update. I did "have to update" to 10.11.x because the upcoming Komplete 11 is for Yosemite and later. I probably would have stayed on Mavericks otherwise, however 10.11.6 and PT 12.5.2 do seem to work great together. I don't regret updating. Besides, my Mac Pro 1,1 (2,1 flashed) might not be able to run Sierra at all, so in the long term I prefer having it stuck to 10.11.x than Mavericks.

El Capitan is officially (!) not supported, but PT 12.5.x runs with El Crap up to x.6 with no problems except of two main issues which have to do with El Crap not with Avid. 1) The GUI lag, 2) no Core Audio support (can be made working with some tricks).

Last edited by jeffro; 08-10-2016 at 08:20 AM. Reason: El Capitan support was added in PT 12.3.

#1 seems to have been partially resolved, the lag is now not as bad as it was when 10.11 was released. Either Apple fixed some things that are not mentioned in the release notes, or Avid made some changes that improved PT's performance, hard to tell. I also had some GUI issues with Mavericks that are now gone in El Capitan.

#2 can't comment on the core audio issue.

...What do you mean not officially supported? El Capitan support was introduced with PT 12.3.

From the Avid page:
Quote:
Mac OS X 10.11.4, 10.11.5 & 10.11.6 are not qualified and not recommended for use with Pro Tools software due to the following known issues:
- CPU performance peaks randomly on lower buffer sizes (AAE error -6101) with non-HD devices
- CPU performance degradation with lower buffer sizes (AAE error -9171) with HDX
- Pro Tools 12.5 Installer takes several minutes to start up
On my systems I don't have these errors (obviously not the one concerning HDX). As for the installer, I just opened it with the terminal, no biggie.

Very sorry to see you go!

El Capitan support was added in Pro Tools 12.3. While it may work acceptably, there are some performance issues starting with 10.11.4 that prevent us from claiming support of these later versions.
