When tracks are assigned to consecutive voices, I've noticed that there is a slight delay between soloing a track in and out. I stick to auto voice assignment unless I'm comping vox....but, that's a different thread.

Sounds like you have "mute frees assigned voice" checked under the operations menu. With that unchecked, there is absolutely no delay when soloing or muting and unmuting.

Now in response to the original poster's question, I don't think there is a "best solution" when it comes to voicing. In some cases, it's necessary to use assigned voices. In most though, using the default of auto will work fine. It's really a non-factor for 95% of the performance envelope. And when all else fails, test it out yourself. If you're looking for opinions though, I use auto voice for virtually every audio track. Good luck.
