MacPro 2008 Firewire 800 Drives
Have an 002R, MacPro (2008) and two Glyph FW Drives with both 800 and 400 Firewire connections.
Does anyone know if there is a problem running the Glyph drives directly into the MacPro at its 800 FW connection points? Then the 002R at the MacPro 400 FW slot? Is there an issue with this? Any comments appreciated. TP |

Re: MacPro 2008 Firewire 800 Drives
I am also having this issue with a Galaxy Metal Gear enclosure connecting via firewire to my Mac Pro which was purchased less than a month ago. I was able to format the drive on my MacBook Pro with no problem and saw it as an external. However, when I go to use it on my Mac Pro it doesn't recognize it. I have tried both Firewire 400 and 800 on both the front and back. Nothing works unless I use a USB connection. When using a standard USB 2.0 the hard drive comes up no questions. Is there a bios/hardware setting that has the firewire ports disabled? I know the connections work fine as I was able to use them in my MacBook Pro. Any push in the right direction would be appreciated.

Re: MacPro 2008 Firewire 800 Drives
I have 10.5.2 client on my MacBook Pro and I have 10.5.2 server on my Mac Pro. I had formatted the drives with extended (journaled) and just extended, neither work. I have spoke with Apple tech support and received some interesting information. The external enclosure is using the Oxford chipset which apparently had a firmware problem with Mac 10.4 machines. Apple and Oxford got together and fixed this issue and applied it to 10.5 as well. However, 10.5 server was not tested in the mix so it could still have an issue. I was told to put in the 10.5 client install disk to see if the external drive was recognized as an available install drive. We could not do this for 10.5.2 server b/c support wasnt sure if server would pick up a firewire external drive as a valid drive available for install. I also would not have been able to boot into the server install disk b/c the early 2008 Mac Pro machines wont run an install disk that has a version less than 10.5.1. Really weird stuff. Needless to say, my 10.5 client install disk did NOT pick up the device as an available installation drive. I also put my Macbook Pro into target mode to see if it would come up as an external on my Mac Pro and it never did. This told me that it is a problem with my logic board for the firewire connections. B/c my server is in production they are sending a tech to replace the logic board. In the meantime I'll stick to my wonderful USB connection. I'll keep everyone posted to see if there are other issue.
Thanks for the response! BTW.. I could have just said Apple was sending out tech support but I thought the information I received may be useful to others if they stumble across similar issues in the future. |

Re: MacPro 2008 Firewire 800 Drives
Thanks Digi. Glymph drives now connected individually on the two 800 ports, 002R on the MacPro 400 port.
No problems ... TP |
