PT 2018 sluggish vs Logic Pro snappy
Not a LP vs.PT war thread at all, I'm running both apps on same machine, same interface. My question is why no matter what audio engine settings etc. even not using any VI's I CANNOT GET PRO TOOLS TO RUN AS FAST AND SNAPPY AS LOGIC PRO? what am I doing wrong?

Re: PT 2018 sluggish vs Logic Pro snappy
I run several machines with both PT and LPX and haven't noticed one being faster or more sluggish than the other... PT 2018.1 certainly has "sluggish" graphics on a 5k screen, but I've found the over all performance excellent, perhaps some details on your system would be a GREAT place to start, type of Mac, how much ram, processor type and speed and also what other software yo may be running/have installed on the same system... could it be a plug in issue? No one can tell/help without a little more info as I said, mine run great.

Re: PT 2018 sluggish vs Logic Pro snappy
PT as snappy as LPX 10.4 here...
The one that isn't for me is Cubase sadly, i have delays simply selecting and unselecting clips with a mouse click. Now, when i am hammering all my cpu cores in PT in 128 project with tons of effects, THEN, yes it slows down during playback only.. But with dynamic processing enabled it releases the cpu when playback is stopped, and everything is snappy again. I am talking about this happening only with projects where pro tool's dsp meter literally shows all logical cores above 80%. so that's to be expected me thinks.

Re: PT 2018 sluggish vs Logic Pro snappy
It could be that the code that makes up Pro Tools is not as highly-optimized as the code that makes up Logic X. PT versions 9.x through 2018.x are not much different from each other except for a few new GUI features, cloud collaboration, that one infamous version that produced random noise blasts, and the stationary playback head that first appeared in the WaveFrame.
Logic X is fancy-lookin' and indeed snappy, but I hate to edit audio with it. I'd rather use Pro Tools 4.3 -or the tried and true 7.4 LE that totally rocks on a 2005 Mini PPC 1.4GHz, 1GB RAM. Almost as good as Studio Vision Pro 3.56 on a Quadra 840AV. An old fix for graphics sluggishness: Set all of your connected displays' colorspace to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 Though it's absurd for the 21st century, it's been known to help. I had a sluggishness problem, but it was from using APFS with 10.13.x I hope this helps.

Re: PT 2018 sluggish vs Logic Pro snappy
I have to say, I bought Logic Pro X a few months ago. During a pro tools session, I finally got very frustrated with running some new waves plugins in pro tools. I don't have HD so i normally cut vocals around 256 ms to make things fluid for my personal taste at 44.1 sessions.
I am a technical person and have been recording albums for bands and myself for years since pro tools LE 7.4 so I'm not new to the game. I know how to optimize performance in pro tools and matching up mac os version with avid qualified os version with pro tools. I am running Pro Tools 12.4 with track freeze, which I love the concept of and use it all the time. anyways. I have to say Logic is outpacing Pro tools with my normal plugin load. Now, it takes my longer learning to edit audio mind you but that's a learning curve. I was actually considering upgrading my mac and decided to use what I paid for, Logic Pro X for more then just composing songs. The latency in Logic was set at 512 and was completely usable to cut vocals with heavy effects chains, a tad more than normally use in pro tools to cut live vocals. and Yet, punch in and punch outs were smoother and required less editing in general without clicks or pops or delay. I also have studio one version 2, and it's about the same performance as pro tools 12.4, not enough to make a performance argument now a days but that's how committed I was to get performance in the past. The point is, Logic Pro X has caught up with avid feature list and outperforms standard pro tools (Not HD), even without track freeze. I guess that because it's Mac Optimized. Whatever it still counts if your using a Mac. Yes It's taking me longer to get songs done, but I'm a logic X newbie, if this keeps up I might be cancelling my avid subscription soon. |
