Default Getting a Quad Today

So I just wanted to know that when I get my Quad today will Pro Tools then show up with the 4 Processor option in the Playback Engine?

And I'm guessing as long as you have done the necessary motherboard tweaks then Pro Tools should be able to access the cores nicely.

Welcome to the DUC.

We found early on as suggested above that running 3 processors did increase stability for us. Many others do run 4 without issue though but we haven't even tried that again since prior to the first cs release.

And as far as running well is concerned; a lot of that will depend on you selecting the proven components as described here in this forum and on the Digi Website compatibility pages.

If you have specific questions about components, this is the place to ask.

As long as BIOS settings etc are set to utilize all cores, PT will see them. But in BIOS, disable SpeedStep (Intel) or COol'n'Quiet (AMD). For quite a few its reaked havok in PT when it's on since PT likes to base its complete internal clock off of the CPU. And for a properly cooled desktops plugged into the wall, they're somewhat stupid features.

Make sure to go through all the optimizations beforehand mentioned within the book. Having a good defragger for your work drives is highly recommended. I've noticed 8 moreso than 7.4 likes to scatter things around haphazardly, and it helps to defrag once a week or so. Ive even once had a high enough level of fragmentation actually cause added latency within ProTools...somewhere up in the thousands of samples

Isloated case, to be sure, but defragging takes only a few minutes a week to keep things in top shape.

I will respectfully have to take an opposing position on this.
I and many others have had horror stories about defragging an audio drive. I have found that the Digi recommended way of transferring all audio to a separate drive and then returning it fresh has been trouble free. Fortunately the drives I lost during Dfrag were well backed on two other drives, but others have not bee so lucky.

That's copying off, formatting and copying back.

Cheers,
