Thanks for the info. I thought I had stopped the automatic updates. But maybe when I permitted one it turned back on possibly.

Did you "upgrade" to Windows 10, or do a clean install?

You technically dont need a login screen. I have all my systems setup so it just boots right up, not requiring a login.

I did an upgrade, not clean install. I will do that when I build my next system.

I lasted on win 10 for about a month before I ran back to 7. When I bought my system it was right when 10 was being pushed and so my Dell came with 7 installed but set up to upgrade seamlessly to 10 and the back up disc was 10 only. I'm a reactionary though so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. Heck , I moved my G4 back to OS 9.3 cuz I cant stand OSX architecture. SO me big dumb Neanderthal.

I did this post awhile back. It goes over a couple apps to block all the Windows Telemetry/update capabilities.

Great info - thanks !!! Hey guitardom, for new PTools PC builds do you currently recommend Win 7 or 10? (My "ancient" i7 rigs are rock-solid on Win 7.)

Very likely you are suffering from potential problems here. Nobody (besides MS) would recommend you to do an upgrade. It works fine for office based computers, but not for what we use them for. To many things are left behind and things configured wrong/odd when doing upgrades.

After working on 10 for as long as I have, I don't like going back to 7, it feels archaic! But besides that, you technically cannot buy Windows 7 outside of old stock, so you cant reliably purchase it anymore. Then you have other issues like most devs are not making Thunderbolt device drivers for 7 and many devs are not even testing on Win 7 anymore. Support for it is starting to fade away.

I also cursed Win10 for a solid 2 months, but now I have gotten used to it enough, and changed settings enough that it no longer bothers me. FWIW, I am religious about drive imaging and cloning(the thought of starting over just makes my blood boil). Re the upgrade VS a fresh install; My backup machine started on Win7 and then ran the Win10 upgrade and I could never get the system to work with my Mbox 2 Pro. Once I started over with a fresh Win10 install, everything worked nicely. My current main rig started out on 10 and I have kept it there. So far(knocking on the nearest wood), none of the updates has screwed the rig up

Agree on the imaging/cloning thing. The only thing that gives me consternation about clean install is how long it will take to reinstall all the software once Win-10 is installed. I'm so afraid I'll overlook some vital files somewhere that a VI or plugin needs and are hidden somewhere, and it'll take me forever to find it on the clone.

Take notes, make a checklist of all the things you need to do and keep in a file in a folder with all the separate installers. I put that on a portable external drive.
