I really only use channel strips to start of a tracking or writing session. And as I start shaping the sound I replace most of them with other plug-ins. Anyone have any preferences on any of these?
Or should I just keep using the Waves SSL channel strip and replace it as I have been doing for years. But for $29 a pop how can I not get them.
For the SSL's, the E is the go to for many producers. Some may prefer the G for rock or metal. But that's just a general take on them. The G has different filters and more gain and cut. You can of course use either the E or G for any style.

Same for the Neve or Focusrite. In fact some of the changes to the SSL G (Pink EQ) were in response to the Neve designed Focusrite EQ filters.

They will all sound a bit different, and have a few different features. Demo them all and see what you like personally. That's really the only way, everything is just an opinion. Hit songs have been cut on all of those desks.

As to the Waves question. What sets the Plugin Alliance desks apart is TMT, which will make a difference.

If anyone want to delve into the depths of the Plugin Alliance SSL E and G, and see how everything works (we even cover TMT) check out this super long video.
There's timecode in the description for each section.

Reports of multiple people the same code multiple times on FaceBook now so it looks like something has been opened up at the Plugin Alliance end. It seems not all code are facilitating this but if you are in the market then get on the FaceBook group and try any of the codes listed, especially the recent ones!

Many people get thrown by the G EQ, because the lower band is only a shelf and has no bell shape, unless its an orange knob.

There's ways around that if you hit the /3 button on the low-mid band, use that to boost the bottom and use the low shelf higher up to take out low mids. Because you're boosting with the other band you tend to compensate for most of the low-end reduction because of the shelf.

This approach, however, is just a bit counter-intuitive for many. Honestly, I wouldn't blame them either. The are quite a few examples of G desks floating around with E eqs in them. Bob Clearmountain for one.

The great thing about plugins is that we are not as limited by these type of design decisions anymore. While Brainworx. SSL's can't swap out eqs, you can swap out the compressor. SO to do a similar thing to Bob you just get yourself an E and switch to the G compressor. The harmonics will be a little different, but hey... choice. Although, you could always turn them off in the bx_console and use the Waves NLS for G harmonics.

This not to say there is anything wrong with the G, it has its uses too.

Picked up Focusrite Console, Ampeg SVT and Shadow Hills Mastering Comp (the newer one). I have so many of their great plugins already but these were a great buy at $29 each!
