Re: Automatic dithering in PT 12.5?
Note that PT automatically applies un-shaped dither, when exporting files to a lower bit depth.
The reason being, that exported files are expected to be imported for use further down the line, summed with other files, and require shaped dither to be applied. In such situations, using shaped dither on the original file export, and then adding further rounds of shaped dither will increasingly cause the dither noise to become an audible hiss. This is why double dithering (with noise shaping) should be avoided. Double dither without noise shaping is of no real consequence. It's up to the end user to apply dither during the final bounce, and to choose the type of noise shaping. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

@Rich Breen
You might be right. From out the video, dither noise is basically tape noise. Tape noise to me it’s basically white noise, and analog devices self-noise is basically white noise too. Though I might be wrong in all this.

Re: Automatic dithering in PT 12.5?
I would also be interested in seeing the video if someone has a link for it?
I have another question on this subject.. I have a 32 bit file that was given to me for mastering. My main computer and mastering system only does 24 bit. However, I have a workstation with Pro Tools 2018.10 so I can take that 32 bit file and convert it to 24 bit. I'm guessing that if I export it, Pro Tools will automatically apply dither, is this correct? The concern here, based on what I've read in this thread is... 1) First off, to confirm, will Pro Tools apply dither from 32 to 24 bits? 2) Should I be applying dither if I intend to master or work on the file after it's dithered down to 24 bit? 3) What suggestions would you have on how to handle this file? Dither, or wait to dither after mastering or? Thanks in advance,

Re: Automatic dithering in PT 12.5?
Yes dither from 32 to 24 will be applied on clip export. On bounce it won’t (you have to manually put a dither plug-in on the master bus in that case)
Yes you should dither going from 32 to 24 There is no problem working on a file that has already been dithered to 24. If the file is going to be 24 still after your mastering work (so 24 start, 24 delivery) there’s no need to dither again. Only if bit truncation is happening.

Re: Automatic dithering in PT 12.5?
Hey Michael. Imagine bumping into you here. :)
Pro Tools does apply dither on export, but not on bounces. For dithering on a bounce you would make the last dsp process in the audio chain a dithering plugin. Set it to dither to the bit depth you want and then bounce out to the bit depth desired. Don't sweat the file format. You likely have a 32-bit floating point file. You can continue to use 32-bit floating point file types in your session, these work perfectly fine with 24-bit hardware and there are no downsides to doing so. Pro Tools converts the bitstream to fixed PCM at output. I would create a new 32-bit floating point session, import the file to be mastered, perform your magic, and bounce it out the way the customer wants.
