You are absolved my child!
We all have to learn from our mistakes. Sometimes it has to hurt to learn! You have been the instrument of his education. You have done nothing amiss.

Darn near every computer or Digi product for sale that is Nubus says "Nubus" in the heading or description. I think it was a little sly of you to leave it out. It was also lax on his part not to research the machine first.

with there being some info on Macs past present and future I can't beleave he couldn't find the specs of a 9100 series. with sites like www.lowendmac.com how could you not find that info. Digi even has info on old systems. Tell him you spent the money.

"Digidesign - PCI I/O cable: $65
Digidesign - 2 Nubus I/O cables: $55 e. $100 both
Digidesign - 16 ch. PCI Y-Cable: Ebay Item #878454244
Digidesign 16 channel Protools 3 system - 2 i/o cards, farm card, in 9150 tower w/newerTech G3/300
Upgrade, 4 gig int. HD, 1 gig int.HD, 256meg int. HD, Floppy, CD, Data Dat, Keyboard, Mouse, AC cord,
Some software, system disk, PT disk, No interfaces: $850"

After reading the add I would say it's almost implied it is a PCI system. Take it back!
