Brilliant solution and a great project for the Raspberry Pi.

So back to the original question. I'm using my iLok and a USB Stick with Waves licenses everyday with virtualhere on a Raspberry Pi as a "USB hub over IP" and it works very reliable.

I only experienced problems in network environments that block IPsec VPN access. But that's usually only the case in public Wifi.
None of this is a knock on you but you're missing the point. I'm trying to point out that one shouldn't depend on this working for too long before Avid puts a stop to it. And as far as the poor planning thing - my comment still stands. That goes for anyone - not just you.

but still avid can't block usb io support. that must be done by the provider of the os. Apple in my case...

anyway, why would they want to block a dongle server?

You're completely missing what I'm saying. Avid wouldn't be blocking the USB I/O support hardware wise but blocking the company from allowing this to be used with Avid software. And it's not only Avid but other s/w developers as well. Actually it might even come down from the iLok people themselves to put out a cease and desist order on this or even change the iLok s/w itself to prevent use of this device.

I totally get what you are saying.
I was interested why you think that Avid would make the effort to block this and what their benefit would be.

just to clarify what this usb server is doing. it emulates a hub connected to the macs USB port. for the OS no difference to a directly connected ilok/usb device.
you can't share the USB port, but you can "virtually" unplug a device from one computer and plug it into another.
think of it like a thunderbolt dock. you connect an ilok to a usb port via thunderbolt and you could switch computers without touching the ilok by plugging the thunderbolt cable into the other machine.

It's what Avid would perceive as a benefit; keeping the 'integrity' of their product intact. That's why they went after SugarBytes and stopped them from selling their aax wrapper. Avid's thing is you move the iLok from machine to machine when you need to change machines. Besides who's to say the micro controller that's being used can't be hacked over the network and made to do things that weren't designed into the original code? Theoretically the code could be rewritten to allow sharing the iLok over many machines at the same time.

it's Pace/iLok that may step up and stop this, they are more threatened by this than Avid

True; I thought I mentioned that it might be more iLok themselves but I'm sure Avid would have a hand in it as well.

thing is it solves a problem for Education customers that want to use iMacs but need to keep the iLoks in safe place.

yeah, this is exactly what is done. without the physical USB cable connection

what micro controller do you mean? the iLok? Of course that could be rewritten by someone. But it makes no difference on what USB port it's connected...

what's the threat? less sales in iLoks due to less loss and theft?
