Default 003 Console - replacement recommendation?

Hi all,

I'm ready to declare my 003 console a legacy device....so would appreciate anyones thoughts on a suitable or near (modern) replacement for it.

I am not worried too much about the number of inputs supported but absolutely prefer, have to have physical & responsive sliders -- I'm very used to the 8 I use on the 003.

I've looked at the Artist series but they are priced well out of my budget.

How do you mix?

Thanks!
Roger

The most affordable option will probably be the new Behringer X-Touch introduced at NAMM, for $599. This is a control surface only, so you will still need an audio interface. The most popular ones with similar I/O seem to be the Focusrite units.

OK...

Couple of thoughts (just my view)

A) It's FW400
B) EUCON (ethernet) is here
C) Too much of my time trying to get it to work correctly
D) It's big & bulky, takes up a lot desk space

Thanks

A) It's FW400 Fast enough for 32 audio streams in both directions. Don't blame Avid, blame Apple for dumping formats willy-nilly(like PCI...)

B) EUCON (ethernet) is here and its really promising, but far from perfect

C) Too much of my time trying to get it to work correctly Not sure what to say there as it works perfectly here. Any issues I have had were self-induced(like wrong FW driver or wrong 003 driver)

D) It's big & bulky, takes up a lot desk space Artist Mix or X-Touch are both smaller(but neither are an interface, so you still need that part in some other unit)

I hear ya. I could live without mine and just use my handy little Presonus Faderport. Tone of options for IO these days

Most audio interfaces are still FW400. There's hardly any that are 800.

Not really understanding what your looking for.

You want an interface and control surface in one?
Anything not from Avid will be HUI protocol, not that it's bad but it is limited.

How much I/O do you need/want?

Hey Craig

Nope - doesn't have to be the same device;

My key criteria is a good set of faders, I/O doesn't matter as much as I tend to record 1 or 2 tracks simultaneously.

I hear you on HUI - but increasingly interested in EUCON.

Thanks for your time

If you want GREAT AUDIO, have you looked at the SSL XLogic X-Desk? I've seen it priced at $3k. I spent over $500k for the sound of SSL and can tell you I will NEVER go back! The quality of the pres, EQ, processing makes your mixing so much easier.

If you are on kind of a budget (as you say the Artist Series would be too much)
and you are not in need of being able to record more than 2 tracks simultaneously,
let me suggest you these 2 combinations:

1. Behringer X-touch Compact + Apogee Duet 2 (399.-+595.-=994.-, you stay
under 1000.- with those)
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products...H-COMPACT.aspx
2. Behringer X-touch + Apogee Duet 2 (599.-+595.-=1194.-)
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/X-TOUCH.aspx

http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/...llers-592989/1

I replaced my 003R when changing from PT10 to 11 with an Apogee Quartet,
which was an incredible step upwards sound wise.
Itīs another class though the 003 was not bad either.

I then bought a Duet 2 as a mobile device for my MBP and have never looked back!
The Duet 2 offers definitely the same audio quality the 003R did, the Quartet is above indeed
(no, the both Apogees are definitely not the same sound wise-everyone who knows the units well
will tell you that seriously).

However the Duet 2 is a high quality pro unit you definitely can use for serious work and
itīs much better sounding than any other interface in itīs price range.
The "weak point" of it is that it only offers 2 channels/inputs but if you donīt
need more you will be right happy with it (you can have 4 outputs if needed-
1-2+the stereo headphone outs which you can connect to another pair of monitors without any problems).
Apogee Maestro 2 works great and seamlessly with Mac OS 10.9.2. (at least with
all 3 of my Macs as there are a Mini Quad i7 late 2012, a Mini i5 Mid 2011, a MBPro mid 2012 9.2)
and it works really flawlessly here with PT11.1.2 on those machines as I can confirm.

The Behringer X-touch is brand new, also now made to work with Pro Tools and
because thereīs no audio data passing through, thereīs no risk to scale down the sound quality in any way.
Itīs just Midi data n stuff.

Itīs just as an suggestion of course.
Best wishes,

cheers, VRW
