Mystery of the Slowing Edit Solved
The problem I've been having, where as I edit - even a simple one track voice over - ProTools slows down to a crawl and eventually stops. Sometimes I'd get the beachball for 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. Sometimes it would just hang. I happened to noticed that the newly created regions all the sudden had a suffix of -15000 or -37000. I turned on the option to display auto-created regions and it showed that I had created some 50,000(!) regions while editing a ten minute voice over that had maybe 15 edits. The problem is the "Separated Regions Operates On All Related Takes" option. Unchecking it solved the issue. I assumed that it only worked on takes that were loop recorded but I was clearly wrong. I know others have complained about the edit slowing down and I recommend you verify that setting.
