Default Problem with 003 and standalone software

I recently updated to 8.0.4 and in general it works fine as long as I am in protools. However I also use my 003 as a midi interface occasionally for example with some native instruments plugins in standalone mode (mainly due to quicker loading times). However now it will not recognize the midi going thru my 003 even though it looks like it is receiving it (light comes on when I press a key). However the audio still works because if I hit a key using the mouse I hear a sound. Also it will receive midi and works fine thru my usb controller (which bypasses the 003).
Any ideas how I can resolve this so that it works in standalone? (as it did before this recent update)

Thank you
